How blessed we are as women to be joined together this evening in unity and in love. I recently read the story of Marie Madeline Cardon, who, with her family, received the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ from the first missionaries called to serve in Italy in 1850. They continued their vicious yells and demands for the missionaries to be brought out. Can’t you just picture that brave young woman, the same age as many of you, standing up to a mob and defending her newly found beliefs with courage and conviction? Sisters, few of us will ever have to face an angry mob, but there is a war going on in this world in which our most cherished and basic doctrines are under attack. When President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008) in June 1995, as he turned 85. He replied: “I am concerned about family life in the Church. We have wonderful people, but we have too many whose families are falling apart. … I think [this] is my most serious concern.”1 Three months later President Hinckley publicly read “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”2 It was no coincidence that this solemn declaration was issued precisely when the Lord’s prophet felt that, of all the subjects on his mind, unstable family life in the Church was his greatest concern. The proclamation was not merely a collection of pro-family platitudes.
Before we explore what that means for each of us, let us consider how modern culture ended up where it is today. And Mom says something crazy, and that makes my brother Casey say something to her. As we grow up and we get older and we all go our own ways and we start living our own lives and fulfilling our own dreams, it's really good to come back together and reconnect. We talk to our family quite often by telephone. But you don't get a true feel of how their life is going on a five-minute telephone call. But if you get together as a family, you can see how their family is together, how they are reacting together. They are societal issues we as individuals cannot necessarily resolve. Nevertheless, there are practical rewards we can achieve as individuals, even at a time when righteousness across the world is in decline. The very idea of “rewards of righteousness” is a concept that is under siege in today’s world. Convincing people to choose righteousness is an age-old challenge. The difference today is that the “great and spacious building” (1 Nephi 8:31) skeptics are louder, more contentious, and less tolerant than at any time during my life. The battle between good and evil is not new. Nevertheless, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never had more faithful members.

Every person who understands the plan of salvation longs for that lasting blessing. The Savior in His mortal ministry spoke of the power to seal families in words to Peter, His chief Apostle, when He said, “Whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19). It is hard to lose a student like this—enthusiastic and bright, the sort who sits on the front row of a large auditorium lecture class and asks good questions. He gave the usual reasons for wanting to transfer: he liked Pepperdine, of course, but it did not offer the technically specialized majors he or his parents were seeking. When asked where he was applying, he listed some elite East-Coast schools, but he seemed most interested in two Hong Kong universities. When asked why, he mentioned a girlfriend, but emphasized that he had a cousin back in China to whom he was extremely close: “He is like a brother to me.”
Since our conversation I keep returning in my thoughts to this student’s strong tie to his cousin. The Christmas story is a family story. Indeed, the accounts we have in the New Testament of the birth of Christ, especially in Matthew and Luke, may be the most well-documented family history account ever given. Not only is there extensive and detailed genealogy recorded, but perhaps nowhere else in all of literature, whether religious or secular, is there a more tender and moving account of family unity, sacrifice, love, and service. The Christmas story is a story of a family that connects heaven and earth. Each member of Jesus’s earthly family—Mary, Joseph, and Jesus—stands as supernal examples of God’s Christmas gift to all mankind. The Christmas story should spiritually motivate us to emulate the attributes of this holy family. Let’s first examine the attributes of Mary. Mary teaches us the importance of trusting in the Lord.
