2013 Executive Coaching Survey. Research: What CEOs Really Want from Coaching - Gretchen Gavett - Our Editors. Two-thirds of CEOs don’t receive any outside advice on their leadership skills, and yet almost all would be receptive to suggestions from a coach. These stats are from a Stanford University/The Miles Group survey released this month, which asked 200 CEOs, board directors, and other senior executives questions about how they receive and view leadership advice. I asked the survey’s co-authors, Stanford Graduate School of Business’ David Larcker and The Miles Group CEO Stephen Miles some questions about what they found and how it applies to CEO coaching specifically. An edited version of our exchange is below. Why is getting coaching from outside the company important? Blind spots are less obvious when things are going well.
It is very easy for executives to become almost strictly inward looking, especially when they have been very successful. Additionally, every single person inside the company has an agenda of some sort. “Soft skills” have an important place in the CEO toolkit. Manager-Coach Systemic Skills Training. A systemic approach to leadership is the art of creating an environment within which a given leader’s or manager’s personnel can grow, learn, take initiatives, assume responsibilities, feel empowered enough to take measured personal and professional risks, develop their autonomy, experiment new performance solutions, focus on achieving results and generally increase their organization’s value.
Ultimately, such a systemic management helps reduce costs and turnover, increase quality, develop responsibility, manage time effectively, set goals, increase reactivity to market variations, permit internal people-development, consolidate individual and collective engagement, strengthen company culture, increase client fidelity, etc. The list is long. In fact today, there are practically no measurable reasons to avoid implementing an effective empowering systemic management style within any maturing organization’s culture. Our motives give us our aims and the drive to achieve them. Anything that's motivating makes us feel good. As one scientist put it to me, "The way nature gets us to do what it wants is by making it a pleasure. " Our motives dictate where we find our pleasures. But when it comes to pursuing those goals , life so often presents difficulties. And when we face setbacks and obstacles in reaching the goals our motives drive us toward, circuitry converging on a zone in the left prefrontal cortex comes alive to remind us of the good feelings we will have once we reach that goal. When things go wrong, this helps us keep going through tough times. People whose emotional setpoint tips toward the left side tend to be more positive in their emotional outlook.

Self-help books through the ages, from Norman Vincent Peale's The Power of Positive Thinking all the way to the latest, The Secret , have encouraged people with low self-esteem to make positive self-statements or affirmations.Research suggests it may do more harm than good to many people. Power Tool: Acceptance Vs. Denial – - International Coach Academy | International Coach Academy. A Coaching Power Tool created by Shelley Breakell (Alcoholism Recovery Coach, UNITED KINGDOM) Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate, or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for those who have the vision to recognize it as such. From Wikipedia Denial (also called abnegation) is a defence mechanism postulated by Sigmund Freud, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence.

Kin to the above opening sentence of this article, paradoxes are illogical double binds. One indeed has to read the above sentence to become aware that one should not read it.

This step, completed prior to sessions, will give structure to what would otherwise be a disorganized process.
Here are some ideas for things you can ask clients to consider in their "planner": - What actions will they commit to? - What challenges did they face since the previous session? - What will be the focus for the next session? These clarifying questions allow you to keep the momentum going and also help your clients to focus on what's important.
