Scott Phillips Photo: Scott Phillips Many people have sewn their whole lives without a custom dress form and didn’t suffer a lick. But if you’re lucky enough to have one, it sure is nice. Just imagine making little style changes and fitting improvements on a 3-D version of yourself. Here’s why a dress form is great and how you can make one, with a little help. Minor pattern adjustments become easy and obvious when you’re looking at the actual problem in fabric on “yourself.” The shape of your shoulders, the position and angle of your neck and the unique distribution of your body weight are issues far more important than questions of circumference, since most clothes hang from the shoulders or the waist, and don’t fit snugly.

The best feature of the do-it-yourself, duct tape form described here is that it’s so quick to make you can have a working form ready in less than two hours. By Denise Sutherland A row counter bracelet is a little mini-abacus for your wrist, which you can wear while knitting or crocheting, and can help you keep track on how many rows you've done.

These nifty gadgets have been around for quite some time, but it's hard to find clear instructions - so here for your enjoyment is a tutorial on how to make your very own. They're especially easy if you are familiar with some beading techniques, but achievable for anyone! The principle is simple - the smaller beads represent 1s, and the bigger beads represent 10s. When each row is knitted (or crocheted), simply move one small bead through the encircling beaded ring to the other side of the bracelet. When you complete the 10th row, move all the small beads back to the 'start', and move one large bead, representing 10, through the ring.

Using this method you can count up to 99 rows, and look glamorous at the same time! This bracelet (above) 'reads' 63 - 6 large '10' beads + 3 small '1' beads. Body shapes and attributes--designing and fitting knitwear, part 2. In the previous post, TECHknitting laid out some background considerations in designing and fitting knitwear.

Today, we turn to the the most basic underlying consideration: what are the shape attributes of the body attempted to be fit? Bodies come in all types and shapes. A quick walk through a crowd reveals tiny sausage-shaped humans in one glance, while the next glance reveals humans of such heroic height or girth that the ancients would have worshipedthemasgods. Yet, despite the continuum underlying human shape and size, we're not going to get very far in the matter of designing or fitting knitwear unless we have some categories in our minds--unless we roughly group body types and attributes into a sort of shape-vocabulary. If you search the internet for the term "body types," you will get lots of different classification systems. When "shape" is mentioned with regard to fitting clothes, what is most often meant is torso shape: the shape of the body from chest to hip.
