Even though most scholarship shows that the current test-crazed education culture isn't educational, it's a fact of life. High schools have to justify results to colleges through timed essays with grading achievement rubrics. Melba Beals nearly died on her first day alive due to racism, and her grandmother India declared on that first day that she was kept alive to battle segregation. She grew up with her mother Lois, father Will, grandmother India, and brother Conrad, but her parents divorced when she was only 7 years old.

That day, a man angry about the ruling attempting to rape Melba on the way home from school. Melba signed up to be one of the integrating students without asking her family. The issue caused such friction that the Governor of Arkansas sent in the National Guard to keep the integrating students [I]out[/I] of the school. Melba's family members were threatened. Melba maintained that, once they were in school, the white kids would realize that the blacks were decent people, too.

A rubric is a way of assessing work that lists the critera for evaluating a student's work (for papers this might be: organization, use of evidence, etc.) and also explains the differences in quality in each criterion (Andrache). Since most of our students have never read a philosophy paper before, let alone written one, it is hardly surprisng that they don't know what makes a paper good or bad. They have never participated in philosophical discussions so they don't really know what constitutes useful participation. Creating rubric is a good way to help them understand what you are looking for before they start to write the paper. The rubric also saves enormous time in helping the professor explain to students why they got the grade they got.
