Dieselpunk for beginners: Welcome to a world where the '40s never ended. Imagine a world where the ’40s never ended—a world where even as technology advanced, the threat of Fascism continued to loom, film noir and screwball comedies were still all the rage, and swing bands and Arrow collars were still the height of fashion. You might think that technology would stagnate in such a world, along with the cultural aesthetic, but instead, technology advances further and faster than we could imagine.

Think Colt .45s that can also shoot transporter beams; brass fighter pilot goggles, made of leather and equipped with Google Glass; bomber jackets lined with fiber-optic transmitters; super-sonic trains racing with zeppelins that can break the sound barrier; robotic bartenders who greet you with a tip of the fedora once you've given the secret password to enter the speakeasy, where mellow jazz plays over a lazy techno beat. And the password to enter this world fused from the past and the future? Dieselpunk. Illustration by stefanparis/deviantART Well, no, not really.

Description[edit] A manipulation on an alternate version of a future 1950s from the developed technology and society of the 1930's, where the Great Depression never arrived and World War II is still being fought as a prolonged Cold War. In turn, Japan continues its progress towards technological modernization, developing the earliest computers and terminals.

Nazi scientists continue experimenting by taking the route of biotechnology, sparking off a genetic revolution of bio-mods, clones, and organ harvesting. Whilst the Americans and British take both of these technologies to develop mind-control devices, spawning man-machine interfaces and sparking the atomic-powered machine age. Themes that usually surface in the genre relate to: The Red Scare - fear of intrusion sparking mass hysteria.Space Race - conquest of Outer Space. Dieselpunk (idea) Dieselpunk (Teslapunk) or Atomicpunk. LoganActorJun 28 2010, 07:06 AMI've heard of Dieselpunk, and I get the concept of atompunk, but haven't read anything in either of those genre's.

Dieselpunk (visually, anyway) seems to be a lot grittier and more down to earth than Steampunk. It's all about the grease and grime of a mechanic's shop, with the sleek lines of cars/planes in the 30's and 40's with the big oversized front grills and lots of chrome trim. Things that make me think of the dieselpunk world are films like The Rocketeer (though it's just this side of the Steampunk/Dieselpunk divide), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Iron Giant, games like Crimson Skies, and even Batman: The Animated Series in some places.

When he's being playboy billionaire Bruce Wayne and hanging out at parties and benefits, Gotham (especially when it comes to the cars and architecture) seems very late 30's early 40's to me. Really anything with evil fascist villians who possess advanced technology. Stonepunk. Bronzepunk. Sandalpunk. Dieselpunk Encyclopedia. The tenets of dieselpunk culture. @RizzRustbolt: That's a delight, and I ken to the distinction. But when I use the google on it, dieselpunk provides me with a metric shitton of stuff that looks like steampunk unless it is drawn art or the occasional motorcycle. I find that it is visually indistinguishable from steampunk when transferred into the real world with the exception of fewer pairs of goggles. @Shini: R.O.A.C.H.: Because there are too many people who hodgepodge together an outfit and tag it as either steampunk or dieselpunk. Think of Art Deco, Rosie the riveter, Dick Tracy or Third Reich fashion as dieselpunk; and well steam locomotives, pocket-watches, brass gears, Art Nouveau and corsets as steampunk.

Or just be yourself and live in the era you feel best suits you. I like steampunk but I hate being called steampunk, the nerf gun and brass goggles are a stigma and too many people unnecessarily over complicate their outfits with brass scraps trying to be someone they're not. Dieselpunk. Dieselpunks. How Dieselpunk Works" Nostalgia can be powerful. It inspires daydreams, it can propel a politician into power and it may serve as the foundation for an entire artistic movement. That's the case with dieselpunk, which is both a subgenre of speculative fiction and an artistic style that roots itself in the aesthetics and technological sophistication of the past. Dieselpunk is similar to another movement called steampunk. But while steampunk draws its aesthetics from the Victorian era of the late 19th century, dieselpunk traces its roots to the early 20th century.

In general, dieselpunk draws inspiration from the 1920s to the 1950s. Everything from that era's architecture, art style, music preferences and pop culture shapes dieselpunk. Influences come primarily from the United States and Europe, though you might find some Japanese culture as well. Like steampunk, dieselpunk marries these trends of the past with the capabilities of today's technology.
