2 Monkeys Were Paid Unequally; See What Happens Next. Your Dog Is a Copycat. The next time your dog digs a hole in the backyard after watching you garden, don't punish him. He's just imitating you. A new study reveals that our canine pals are capable of copying our behavior as long as 10 minutes after it's happened. The ability is considered mentally demanding and, until this discovery, something that only humans and apes were known to do.

Scientists first discovered that dogs are excellent at imitating their owners in 2006. Or at least, one dog had the talent: Philip, a 4-year-old Belgian Tervuren working with József Topál, a behavioral ethologist at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. Topál adapted the method (called "Do as I do") that Keith and Catherine Hayes developed in the 1950s for teaching an infant chimpanzee to copy their actions. But Miklósi didn't fully accept this; he thought that the experiment needed to be adjusted by teaching the dogs more explicitly. Karen Pryor Academy: The Most Efficient Path to Becoming an Animal Trainer. Veterinarians, technicians and other dog enthusiasts often ask me about the most efficient way to learn about animal training or to become a trainer. Currently, my best recommendation is the Karen Pryor Academy and others agree. Just ask veterinary technician Debbie Martin, a KPA graduate and co-author of Puppy Start Right: Foundation Training for the Companion Dog.

Martin was no beginner when she took the KPA trainer course in 2008. She had been teaching puppy socialization classes in the veterinary hospital where she was employed starting in 1997 and, for three years, she had been the animal behavior technician for Veterinary Behavior Consultations, LLC, a mobile veterinary clinic with practice limited to animal behavior where she assists Dr.

Says Martin, "The KPA program helped take me from being a good trainer to one that can tackle nearly any training challenge. Wondering what the KP Academy is all about? Q. A. Q. A. Q. A. Q. A. Q. A. Courtesy of Canine Sports Productions by Chris Zink DVM, PhD, DACVP Orthopedic Considerations A study by Salmeri et al in 1991 found that bitches spayed at 7 weeks grew significantly taller than those spayed at 7 months, and that those spayed at 7 months had significantly delayed closure of the growth plates than those not spayed (or presumably spayed after the growth plates had closed).(1) A study of 1444 Golden Retrievers performed in 1998 and 1999 also found bitches and dogs spayed and neutered at less than a year of age were significantly taller than those spayed or neutered at more than a year of age.(2) The sex hormones promote the closure of the growth plates, so the bones of dogs or bitches neutered or spayed before puberty continue to grow.

Dogs that have been spayed or neutered well before puberty can frequently be identified by their longer limbs, lighter bone structure, narrow chests and narrow skulls. Leptospirosis is feared by many veterinarians because it can cause severe kidney or liver disease in its pet victims. It’s double feared because it’s a zoonotic disease; in other words, you can get it too. Many vets use this fact to justify the administration of this supposedly protective vaccine. But a good vaccine should be both safe and effective. Let’s examine whether or not the yearly lepto vaccination is either.

One of the most commonly administered vaccines, the distemper/parvo combination (often combined with adenovirus), has been dubbed a core vaccine by the American Veterinary Medical Association. For decades, this vaccine had been administered annually by most veterinarians. But due to decades of research and recent consumer pressure, the AVMA has recently adopted guidelines that decrease the recommended frequency of the core vaccines to every three years or more. So, what is a vet to do when their income from annual visits goes down? FREE Cruciate Tear Guide. Myemail.constantcontact.com/2-Seminars-Not-To-Be-Missed-.html?soid=1102211686390&aid=wcUgJS42D60.

Smart Animal Training Systems | How It Works. Pet Tutor™ - Smart Technology for Positive Training. As seen at the APDT Conference 2013 in Spokane,WA www.apdt.com From phone apps to tracking systems or food dispensers, over the past decade, technology has gradually made its way into the world of dog training. There was a time where most technology was applied to tools that were primarily focused on punishing the animal, delivering a shock, a buzz or a spray, but with the advances in our understanding of animal behavior and the development of mechanical and electronic tools, we now have new ways to apply technology to positive reinforcement.

Smart Animal Training Systems is a brand new company dedicated to the development of positive solutions to help owners (or guardians) and trainers with their pets. The company is launching the most advanced technological training device: Pet Tutor™ (patent pending),a remotely controlled intelligent treat dispensing tool designed to assist us in training, feeding and playing with our pets. Liz's puppy, Bones My puppy, Bones, is now nine months old and I’m seeing some changes in his behavior. He’s bolder than he has been in the past and is more curious about the world around him. He’s not listening to me as well as he did and sometimes even tries to ignore me.

He’s also pushing my two older dogs more - trying to steal their toys and playing harder. If I didn’t know better, I might be a little concerned about his behavior. Adolescence is Annoying In humans, adolescence is the time when teenagers are in transition from children to adults. Canine adolescents are similar. If your puppy spends time with adult dogs, as my puppy does, you may find that the adult dogs are not quite as patient with him as they used to be. Patience and Consistency Don’t take the challenges of adolescence personally.

During this stage of puppyhood, practice patience. Practice your puppy’s training skills often. Be consistent with your household rules. This Won’t Last Forever Looking for more like this? Training is a partnership | Trust. Love. Science. It works. Earlier this month, I was lucky enough to attend a webinar for the Academy for Dog Trainers hosted by Certified Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer extraordinaire Kathy Sdao. She facilitated an excellent discussion on the importance of training nomenclature – in particular, how we should describe the relationship we have with our dogs. Thanks to faux science dog training television programs and deeply entrenched dog behavior myths, many dog owners and trainers resort to the word “dominance.” Some use it so much, it appears they are afraid that without a shock collar and a tight leash, their dogs will not only display “dominance,” but will take over their household in a reign of terror.

Science has fully debunked the dominance myth (discussed here), but that doesn’t mean people still won’t cling to the label. Leadership is another word that is gaining momentum in the dog training community. Leadership and dominance protocols are frightfully complicated. Like this: Like Loading... Halloween is lots of fun for kids, but many dogs will be confused or upset by kids in strange costumes and by lots of people coming to the door, but never being invited in. Doggone Safe offers the following tips for dog owners, kids and parents: Dog owners: Secure your dog behind a closed door or in a crate in a room away from the front door or the party if children are meeting at your house. Give him a stuffed Kong or other long lasting chew. Play music or leave a TV or radio playing in the dog’s room to help mask the sounds of the activity at the front door. Close drapes so that the dog does not see people coming and going thr ough the window.

Kids and Parents: Avoid houses if you can hear a dog barking behind the door, you can see a dog behind a screen door or you see a dog tied up in the yard or barking behind a fence. Dogs who pass the AKC Community Canine test earn the official AKC Community Canine title that is designated by the letters "CGCA" (Advanced CGC) on the dog's title record. Whereas Canine Good Citizen tests are most often tested in a ring and situations are simulated (e.g., 3 helpers serve as a "crowd"), the AKC Community Canine test is done in real situations including at shows, classes, and in the community.

AKC Approved CGC Evaluators administer the AKC Community Canine test. Age Requirements for Dogs There is no age limit for dogs taking the AKC Community Canine test. However, before taking the test, dogs must have a Canine Good Citizen test on record at AKC. There are several exceptions to having no age limit at an AKC Community Canine test.
