Memory-enhancing drug reverses effects of traumatic brain injury in mice | Science | AAAS. Whether caused by a car accident that slams your head into the dashboard or repeated blows to your cranium from high-contact sports, traumatic brain injury can be permanent. There are no drugs to reverse the cognitive decline and memory loss, and any surgical interventions must be carried out within hours to be effective, according to the current medical wisdom. But a compound previously used to enhance memory in mice may offer hope: Rodents who took it up to a month after a concussion had memory capabilities similar to those that had never been injured.

The study “offers a glimmer of hope for our traumatic brain injury patients,” says Cesario Borlongan, a neuroscientist who studies brain aging and repair at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Borlongan, who reviewed the new paper, notes that its findings are especially important in the clinic, where most rehabilitation focuses on improving motor—not cognitive—function. . (1) MARY BERRY(2) COLIN BERRY v COSTCO UK. UM researchers awarded $1M to study use of meth to limit brain injury impacts. An accidental discovery by a University of Montana researcher may soon lead to the clinical testing of a new drug that limits the impacts of traumatic brain injury and reduces post-traumatic epilepsy in rats. Research professor Dave Poulsen and members of his team in the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences found that low doses of methamphetamine reduced brain damage in rats after a traumatic brain injury or stroke.

The U.S. Army last month awarded Poulsen $1 million to further test the drug. The team will soon learn if the project wins an additional $6 million from the Joint Warfighter Medical Research Program – funding that would place the drug on the fast track toward clinical testing in human patients. “It’s huge,” Poulsen said last week in his office. Armed with a litany of scientific papers citing the neurotioxic dangers of methamphetamine, Poulsen set out to analyze the drug in 2006. They believe they’ve found that in methamphetamine. “It’s like a bucket with. Live better, together! | PatientsLikeMe. Find Patients w/ Treatments, Symptoms and Side Effects Like You. At that moment I was manning the phones in my assistant’s absence and I felt drawn to talk with Deborah. I could tell that she was a sincere, intelligent and observant woman and with some encouragement she quietly and easily told me about the astonishing experience she has had with EFT.

After listening to her account and asking my many "check up" questions, I asked Deborah if she would write down her experiences and submit them to me so that I could pass them along to you. Here is Deborah's simply recounted story. She began by saying that, "My skull was crushed at birth and thereafter for six months my skull was opened and pressed on twice a week to prevent fluid build up. This is Deborah's clear objective statement about what was a near disaster in a newly begun life – the smashing of a baby's brain. Free Brain Injury Journey Magazine. It has the potential to treat head injuries suffered in combat, car accidents, falls, or gunshot wounds. Developed by Dr. Ning Zhang at Clemson University in South Carolina, the gel is injected in liquid form at the site of injury and stimulates the growth of stem cells there.

Brain injuries are particularly hard to repair, since injured tissues swell up and can cause additional damage to the cells. More recently, scientists have considered transplanting donor brain cells into the wound to repair damaged tissue. Dr. In a follow-up study, Dr. The new gel could treat patients at varying stages following injury, and is expected to be ready for testing in humans in about three years. Science Can Now Turn Human Urine Into Brain Cells. It turns out urine isn't just human waste. Chinese researchers have managed to reprogram kidney cells harvested from urine samples into neural cell progenitors--immature brain cells that can develop into various types of glial cells and neurons.

Reprogramming cells has been done before, of course, but not with cells gleaned from urine and not via a method this direct (more on that in a moment). The technique could prove extremely helpful to those pursuing treatments for neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. The innovation here is in the source and the method. But embryonic stem cell treatments are fraught with ethical issues and non-embryonic methods are complicated--and complexity introduces a greater chance of something going wrong (in this case that means mutations and genetic defects). In their study, the researchers harvested kidney cells from the urine samples of three human donors and converted the cells directly to neural progenitors.

[The Guardian] Scientists Paint Brain Tumors With Nanoparticles for More Precise Removal. Brain cancer is a classic double whammy: the extremely invasive form of cancer is both deadly and difficult to treat. Fortunately, there's a promising solution on the table: tumor painting. Because brain cancer tends to invade surrounding healthy brain tissue, it blurs the line between tumor and non-tumor tissue, and makes it difficult for surgeons to circumvent the healthy parts of the brain when they saw away at the tumor.

On top of that, current imaging techniques produce fairly imprecise representations of the tissue, which only compounds the problem. But now, researchers at the University of Washington have found that they can illuminate mouse brain tumors (and thus distinguish them from surrounding tissue in MRIs and optical imaging) by injecting fluorescent nanoparticles into the rodents' bloodstream. To reach the tumor, the nanoparticles have to traverse the blood-brain barrier, an almost impervious gate that protects the brain from infection. Traumatic Brain Injury Increases Dementia Risk - San Francisco VA Medical Center. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 Patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI) had over twice the risk of developing dementia within seven years after diagnosis compared to those without TBI, in a study of more than 280,000 older veterans conducted by researchers at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco. “This finding is important because TBI is so common,” said senior investigator Kristine Yaffe, MD, chief of geriatric psychiatry at SFVAMC and professor of psychiatry, neurology and epidemiology at UCSF. She noted that about 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with TBI each year. In addition, she said, TBI is often referred to as the “signature wound” of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, where it accounts for 22 percent of casualties overall and affects up to 59 percent of troops exposed to blasts.

The findings were presented at the 2011 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease in Paris, France. TBI Dementia and active brains--offsetting? Auditory processing. FAQs for court of protection - Court of Protection - Trusts and Estates. For a breakdown of the costs of a professional deputy please click here Once the application has been sent to the Court it usually takes 2 or 3 months for someone to be appointed as Deputy.

There can be delays prior to sending the application to Court as the medical evidence can sometimes take a long time to get hold of depending on the medical practitioner involved. The medical practitioner sometimes charges a fee for completing the medical evidence. Some practitioners do not charge for their services. It is entirely down to luck whether a fee is charged or not. When the practitioner does charge, their fee can range from £50 to £300. The Court charges an application fee of £400. The Court then charge an annual supervision fee which ranges from £0 to £800. The Deputy has to also take out a ‘security bond’ to cover their actions as Deputy and this too is payable annually.

Finally, a solicitor will also charge a fee for making the application to appoint the Deputy. Golden Charter Family Protection Trust. You really have to read the small print as things that you would expect to be covered for a funeral are not. It makes me so mad he died obviously thinking that he had paid for everything, which would be the whole point of taking out one of these policies. It's SO wrong, that is broken down into: £165 for the Church fees, heating & organist £40 leaflets £100 to put the notice in the 2 local papers where he lived £250 to purchase a grave (you can't exactly have a funeral burial without one!)

None of these things are extravagant or even in addition to what most people consider the norm for a funeral. I'm quite good at understanding financial documents but even I would have been a bit fooled by the way they market it. Make a Lasting Power of Attorney - Beneficent Law CIC.
