Successful Teen Homeschooling: Two Vital Factors | Laura Grace Weldon. The teenaged years are actually the most rewarding of the homeschooling years. That’s what we’ve found with our four homeschooled children. And that’s what I was told by many of the 110 families I interviewed for my book Free Range Learning:: How Homeschooling Changes Everything .

People in Ireland, Australia, India, Germany, and the U.S. described coming to this realization in similar ways. Their concerns about helping a young child master the basics or their struggles to find the right homeschooling style gradually resolved. Parents grew to trust the process of learning much more completely and, perhaps as a result, they saw their children mature into capable and self-directed young people. Homeschooling isn’t the cure-all, by any means, for a culture that barely recognizes a young person’s need for identity and meaning. There are a number of pivotal elements in the period we call adolescence. Pursuing interests builds character traits that benefit us for life. This makes sense. Homeschool Theme of the Week: Dentist and Teeth!

A visit to our new dentist was in order recently, so I decided it would be the perfect time for a unit on teeth and dentists. I would also like to point out that one VERY handy and cheap little item we use for our own Miss A is a timer which has a button for brushing teeth and a button for washing hands. She hits the tooth button and a light flashes and continues flashing (faster as the time counts down) until it turns red to let her know it is time to stop brushing her teeth (or washing her hands if that was the button pushed). It is sooooo wonderful to have because it is a good visual aid to help her know how long she should take when brushing her teeth (or washing hands) in order to do a good job.

I will post a link below if you are interested. I saw this activity (see here) and loved the idea of teaching flossing by using legos and playdough so that is what we did! Another activity (see site here) used egg cartons for teeth. Welcome to our Toothpaste Factory! Roadtrip Ready: Travel Snack Boxes. Welcome to day one of my new series Roadtrip Ready! I am so excited to share all of my fun roadtrip ideas, and few of my friends' great ideas as well. Today I am sharing a fun idea inspired by a project I saw on Pinterest. The idea behind these travel snack boxes is that each kid gets a box full of snacks at the beginning of the your trip. They get to eat the snacks any way they want...all at once or spread out through the day...but when it's gone, it's gone!

I started with these divided boxes that I picked up at Ikea for about $4 each. I added a piece of chalkboard vinyl to the top of the boxes. Then I cut the boys' names out with my Silhouette and added the names to the top of the boxes. Henry got blue, Grant got green, but Eli ended up with yellow because I didn't have any orange vinyl. The great thing about these boxes is that you can fill them up with anything you want. And when the kiddos start chanting "I'm bored" all you have to do is hand them a piece of chalk! FAMILY Scripture Study Journals. My husband and I have said over and over that we need to study the scriptures together and it is a goal that we have failed at!

We hadn’t come up with something that actually works for us. We have tried reading together at night, we have talked about preparing our lessons together, we have tried studying in the afternoon… you get the picture. And when we have tried, it hasn’t been especially effective because we didn’t have a program or goal other than that we should study together. It has been frustrating because we both know how important it is and how it will help strengthen our home and family! I made it with families in mind, but it works for couples too. This journal is designed to go along with a scripture study session that lasts 10 or 15 minutes or it could be used for a longer more extensive study. One thing I love about this journal is that not only does it help us have a quick and effective study, but it leaves a record behind.

Some ideas for you: I love this part. Free Constitution 101 Online College Course. I ♥ mathematics {platonic solids garland} Oooh….it’s been I while since I last posted. We had a smashing Christmas and new year. Hope you all did too! My computer died just before Christmas and it’s taken my hubby and I a while to bring it back to life…which is why it’s been a bit quiet.

I lost 3 months worth of work (new years resolution no.33 = backup files more regularly!). Now seems like a good time to thank all you lovely lot for visiting minieco over the last couple of years. I am ever amazed at the increasing number of people who tune in! I also realise as far as bloggers go I am quite slack…only managing to get a post up every week or two. In between posts I regulary use pinterest so do pop over and check it out if you haven’t already. There seems to be a bit of a Polyhedra craze going on at the moment. I have put together some templates for a ‘platonic solids‘ garland. Simply chop, score and glue together. Don’t forget to thread your cotton in whilst glueing the pieces together….I forgot!
