CEDAW 29th Session 30 June to 25 July 2003. Welcome to the Child Trends DataBank. The Child Trends DataBank examines and monitors more than 100 indicators that focus on risks and positive developments for children.

Welcome to the Child Trends DataBank

For each indicator we summarize what the research says about its importance to children’s development, track trends over time and by subgroup, and highlight strategies likely to improve well-being. We also provide links to state, local, and international data. Our estimates come from reliable sources including federal reports and websites. Other resources in the indicators area include The Child Indicator newsletter and Facts at a Glance. Why Indicators Matter. Environment and Climate Change - Introduction. Global Small Grants Information. Why the Global Warming Skeptics Are Wrong by William D. Nordhaus. The threat of climate change is an increasingly important environmental issue for the globe. Because the economic questions involved have received relatively little attention, I have been writing a nontechnical book for people who would like to see how market-based approaches could be used to formulate policy on climate change. When I showed an early draft to colleagues, their response was that I had left out the arguments of skeptics about climate change, and I accordingly addressed this at length. But one of the difficulties I found in examining the views of climate skeptics is that they are scattered widely in blogs, talks, and pamphlets. Then, I saw an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal of January 27, 2012, by a group of sixteen scientists, entitled “No Need to Panic About Global Warming.” This is useful because it contains many of the standard criticisms in a succinct statement.

Think Big! Arizona Solar Tower 2X Taller Than the Empire State Building Will Produce 200 Megawatts

Solar towers, which are kind of big funnels that generate electricity by using the fact that hot air rises, are too often forgotten when we discuss solar energy. Solar PV and CSP get all the press, but solar towers have attractive power-generating characteristics and I wish more companies were working on perfecting them. EnviroMission is an Australian company working on that very thing, and they've announced that they want to build a gigantic 2625 feet/800 meters solar tower in the Arizona desert that would produce about 200 MW, enough to power 150,000 US homes.

Biodiversity. Author and Page information by Anup ShahThis Page Last Updated Sunday, January 19, 2014 The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity.

Biodiversity

The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth. Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. 9 articles on “Biodiversity” and 2 related issues: Why Is Biodiversity Important? Using the Index, you apply readily available information about a species’ natural history, distribution and landscape circumstances to predict whether it will likely suffer a range contraction, population reductions, or both during the coming years. Adolescents and youth - Introduction

The experiences, knowledge and skills acquired in adolescence have important implications for an individual’s prospects in adulthood. UNICEF defines adolescence in three stages: early (10-13 years of age), middle (14-16), late (17-19) adolescents. Adolescents and Youth. Today's adolescents and youth are 1.8 billion strong and make up one quarter of the world's population.

Adolescents and Youth

They are shaping social and economic development, challenging social norms and values, and building the foundation of the world's future. Maturing earlier than previous generations, both physically and socially, adolescents and youth have high expectations for themselves and their societies, and are imagining how the world can be better. Connected to each other like never before through new media and because of globalization, they are driving social progress and directly influencing the sustainability and resilience of their communities and their nations. While notable progress has been made, many adolescents — especially girls — are denied the investments and opportunities that they need to realize their full potential. For example, 26 per cent of girls (39 million) and 17 per cent of boys of secondary school age (11-15) were not enrolled in school in 2008.
