6 Insane Coincidences You Won't Believe Actually Happened. America's Freak Luck During the Battle of Midway The Battle of Midway may be remembered as one of the most spectacular naval battles in history and one of the huge turning points in the Pacific theater, but it started out as a pure clusterfuck for the Americans.

Despite going into battle with most of Japan's game plan in their pocket thanks to American codebreakers/Bothan spies, the U.S. Navy had little to show for it in the early hours of June 4, 1942. Just about every aircraft that took on the Japanese that day was destroyed, and all without delivering any serious damage.

In short, the Battle of Midway started off like the Battle of Endor, only with every fighter in the Rebel Fleet crashing into the Death Star's deflector shield. Where it Gets Weird: There was one squadron of American dive bombers lead by Lieutenant Commander C. His squadron started dropping like flies until, in an act of sheer luck that would make even J.K. Where it Gets Even Weirder: ...when he wasn't busy being a pimp.

Does it come with a left hand throttle like the one in the movie? Ha - I hadn't noticed that! :) But no, I don't think so. (Are there really ones with left-hand throttles? I'm asking hoping to not look like a fool. I've never driven one, and don't think I've seen one. Very rarely. Yup. There are quite a few MT-01s where I live (I don't like them much, however I enjoyed its little sibling the -03 a lot, even though there's no way you can drive either like the one in the film) and that's why I knew the sound was definitely not this one :) It does sound more like a racing, medium-displacement two-stroke, doesn't it? iTools - use the best tools. World's total CPU power: one human brain.

How much information can the world transmit, process, and store? Estimating this sort of thing can be a nightmare, but the task can provide valuable information on trends that are changing our computing and broadcast infrastructure. So a pair of researchers have taken the job upon themselves and tracked the changes in 60 different analog and digital technologies, from newsprint to cellular data, for a period of over 20 years. The trends they spot range from the expected—Internet access has pushed both analog and digital phones into a tiny niche—to the surprising, such as the fact that, in aggregate, gaming hardware has always had more computing power than the world's supercomputers.

The authors were remarkably thorough. For storage media, they considered things like paper, film, and vinyl records, and such modern innovations as Blu-ray discs and memory cards. Even so, there are some significant estimations here. Storage Some trends are very, very obvious. Computation. Top 10 Space-Saving Household Projects. Whether you live in a tiny apartment or just have too much stuff, there's likely a lot of space you aren't using, like your walls, your ceilings, or the nooks and crannies in your furniture. Here's how to use it most efficiently.P 10. Hang Your Bike on the WallP SExpand If you're in an apartment, you probably don't have a lot of great places to store your bike outside, and it can take up a lot of floor space just sitting around.

We've covered quite a few ways to cheaply mount that bike to your wall, whether it's using tension cables, IKEA storage poles (which can be carpet-friendly if necessary), or just a few 2x4s.P 9. If you've already exhausted the storage nooks under your bed, the ceiling is ripe with unused space. 8.

If floor space is at a premium, you can maximize it by moving those bookshelves up onto the wall, freeing up the floor for storing other things (and making it easier to clean). 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. The events probably didn’t happen exactly as described, but for my purposes it doesn’t really matter. Supposedly, a woman posted the following personal ad on Craigslist: What am I doing wrong? Okay, I’m tired of beating around the bush. I’m a beautiful (spectacularly beautiful) 25-year-old girl. The response she got was as follows: Dear Pers-431649184:I read your posting with great interest and have thought meaningfully about your dilemma. I have to say that the respondent has some pretty sensible economics in his answer. I wouldn’t expect male economists to marry very well. Also, completely contrary to what an economic model might predict, I can’t think of any economist who left his wife in middle age for a younger “trophy” wife.

So maybe economists aren’t such heartless, conniving people after all. (Hat tip: Meng Li.) Huan - Cat. Awesome (22 votes). Infographic of the Day: Is College Really Worth It? | Fast Compa. Is going to college really worth it? Probably so, but it's not that clear cut, and economics have been arguing the point for 30 years. Most studies tend to show that college-educated people end up making far more money in the course of their lifetimes. (The niggle: Usually, it's not worth paying for a private university.) Still, that evidence isn't totally cut and dry: What do you really learn in college? This graph makes a couple points in that debate: 1. But who in their right mind wouldn't recommend a college degree?

If I had a guess, I think it's precisely that attitude that creates all the economic advantages--its the way our society is organized, rather than anything about college itself.
