Web3.0. The Robot Made Me Do It: Comparing Three New Cyborg Q&A Serv. One part people, one part machine. Is that a formula for more effective decision making? A number of high-profile entrepreneurs believe it is, and they are starting companies based on the idea. In the following post we take a look at three of the most exciting startups entering this emerging market. The movement is a logical development now that millions of people are comfortable posting information online. The web’s next step is to leverage machine learning. The three services we look at are Aardvark, Hunch and Swingly.

Aardvark vark.com (Our initial review) Premise: Ask any question by IM and your question will be routed to a tagged “expert” on the topic, among your friends and their networks. Logic: There appears to be some semantic analysis of the tags given users by their friends and themselves, cross referenced with semantic analysis of the questions asked in order to find the right fit. History of one query. An IM thread. Editing user profile. Backing: Made up largely of ex-Googlers. 50+ Semantic Web Pros to Follow on Twitter - ReadWriteWeb. Here at ReadWriteWeb, we find the Semantic Web fascinating. We write about it a lot. What is the semantic web? The way we explain it is that it's a paradigm advocating that the meaning of content on the web be made machine readable.

Why would you want to do that? Because once the "meaning" of text is automatically discernible, there's a whole new world of things we can do with content on the web. Far out things that full text search for the mere presence of keywords would never be able to accomplish. Who's working on the semantic web and how can you meet them? In November, 2007 we published a list of 10 Semantic Web companies to watch. Based on those lists, and reader suggestions in comments of other companies that should be watched, we present to you a list of 50+ Twitter users who work at Semantic Web companies.

The Protégé Ontology Editor and Knowledge Acquisition System. The Twitter Gold Mine & Beating Google to the Semantic Web - There’s always been jabs at Twitter for not having a viable business model and the chatter has increased in the current economic climate. In a recent interview Evan Williams, Twitter CEO, said “We had planned to focus on revenue in 2010 but that’s no longer the case, so we changed the plan quite a bit… We’ve moved revenue higher on our list of priorities…”. I believe Twitter, potentially, has an incredible business model. In The New York Times R&D Labs, where I work, we’ve been talking a lot about ‘smart content’, both in relation to advertising, search and news delivery.

For the past 157 years (that’s how old the newspaper is) we’ve essentially delivered ‘dumb content’ to people’s doorsteps. This also changes the advertising model where ads become even smarter. So what does this have to do with a Twitter business model? And it doesn’t have to be advertising delivered on their site alone. 10 Semantic Apps to Watch - One Year Later - ReadWriteWeb. In November 2007, we listed and reviewed 10 promising Semantic Web apps.

A lot can happen in one year on the Internet, so we thought we’d check back in with each of the 10 products and see how they’re progressing. What’s changed over the past year and what are these companies working on now? The products are, in no particular order: Freebase, Powerset, Twine, AdaptiveBlue, Hakia, Talis, TrueKnowledge, TripIt, Calais (was ClearForest), Spock. In our next post in this series, we’re going to publish a completely new list of Semantic apps to watch! Freebase Freebase is an open, semantically marked up database of information. Freebase has been one of the more hyped companies in Semantic Web, leading to some skepticism that the product is too much like Wikipedia and offers nothing much new. However, we noted some concerns with Freebase – “big gaps in the data” along with usability issues. RWW verdict one year later: still lots of work to do for Freebase, in terms of usability and useful data.
