Pens That Write Right! Featured Pen - Eversharp Skyline Executive. If you are a regular reader of my blog you will immediately recognize this pen from my previous post A Paper Conundrum... however since I have not had it all that long it has never been the subject of a Featured Pen post.

I fell in love with the look of these Skyline pens a few months ago and decided that I had to have one. My friend and fellow blogger, Mary at A Few of My Favorite Things... heard my call and assisted me in the acquisition of this pen and a standard model (the subject of a future post I'm sure). The company had always had good sales of its pencils, to the point that "Eversharp" was a common term for mechanical pencils, much as other products, such as "Kleenex" were coming into common usage. In 1940, the company reorganized under the Eversharp name and embarked on design of a new pen and pencil line to revive sales. Dreyfuss drew heavily from prior works, especially the streamlined New York Central Railroad locomotive, the Twentieth Century Limited. The new pen line proved to be a huge success, with over eleven million Skylines sold from 1941 through 1949, making it the largest selling pen of the early 1940s and the largest seller ever for Eversharp. Henry Dreyfuss, a noted industrial designer of the 20th century, actually assisted in the design of the Wahl / Eversharp Skyline. If the Gold Seals and Dorics and Coronets of the previous decades exemplified Art Deco, then the Skyline looked forward to the cleaner, simpler modern design ethic of the 1940s and 50s. As great a design as it was, the Skyline was sadly overtaken by events that eventually led to the dissoltion of Eversharp as an independent company. Whatever success the Skyline may have had (or not had) at the time, however, it really came into its own in the 1990s, long after its demise; it inspired a number of tributes and overt imitations, and at least one full-scale reissue (one model of which was finished in bright yellow and came with a souvenir model Yellow Cab).

Generous wartime production allowances played their part, but its radical styling and consistently smooth and responsive nibs made it a favorite of writers then and now. Eversharp was a pioneer in hiring well-known industrial designers (the Loewy-designed Symphony was introduced in 1948); for the Skyline, it turned to Henry Dreyfuss, whose credits included numerous icons of modernist design. Few books on Dreyfuss mention his work for Eversharp, though the connection with his other prewar streamline designs – the 20th Century Limited, for example – is obvious.
