Advanced Content Tracking with Universal Analytics. A while ago I wrote Advanced Content Tracking – a post about how to measure if users are actually reading your content. I’ve been getting a lot of requests to update this code for Universal Analytics. So here it is – an updated script specifically for use with Universal Analytics. This Google Analytics customization collects data as users scroll down a page. It uses events to track when a post loads, when the user scrolls more than 150 pixels, when the user reaches the bottom of the content and when the user reaches the bottom of the page. This technique uses Google Analytics events to track a user as they scroll down a page of content. The end result is some cool data about how many users actually read content. You can access the Reading data in your Event reports. The Scroll Tracking Code Here is the JavaScript code that measures user scrolling.

TIP – You can use the tabs at the top of the code window to try the script. What’s changed in this version? This change will impact your data! 1. Social Media for Email, Email for Social Media. Social media and email marketing: Which is better? That’s not just the wrong question, it’s the wrong kind of question. What do you like more, your house or your car? What’s better for you, food or drink? As questions, they just don’t make sense. Both options are necessary (so they aren’t options, really). Both are complementary. To be fair to the current crop of controversy-grabbers, this one has been doing the rounds for a while now. Here we go round the mulberry bush… The Two Musketeers First, let’s take a look at what email and social bring to the table by themselves. Email: High ROI: For every $1 spent on email, the channel generates $44.25. Social Media: Brand awareness: Social media is basically endless, free syndication, leading to greater brand awareness. One for the Other It doesn’t take much to realize that we’re not in the business of email marketing or social media marketing; we’re in the business of marketing.

Social media for email: Social media makes great sense for email. Email: Learning to design in the open. In the last post from our design team, we defined two facets of open design thinking: open source design and designing in the open. We’ve been experimenting with both of these ideas in our design processes to facilitate collaboration and to increase feedback and dialogue at every step along the way. Big questions As we began to embrace open design into our own processes, we encountered some challenges that posed big questions for the way we work. How do we make our design presence in our open source projects more visible?

It’s difficult to trace the influence of our design team in code repositories on Github. How do we share our design work both internally and externally? How do we license our design work in a way that is conducive to open design? Evolving our process & current solutions We’ve put some time into addressing these things as we work toward adopting an open design ethos, which has changed our processes somewhat. Not only do they help me plan and prioritize, but they help me visualize how everything I’m working on fits together. No, I won’t be talking about (and I’m looking at you, classically trained marketers) the 4Ps, Porter’s 5 forces, or SWOT analyses. Sure, those frameworks have their place, but they don’t provide much direction for startups looking to focus their energy on growth.

Plus, they’re getting pretty old. The frameworks below were developed by modern marketing gurus. Let’s start off with some growth frameworks. The Startup Pyramid Sean Ellis (CEO of Qualaroo, godfather of growth hacking) uses this framework when thinking about startup growth. Product/Market Fit: Appropriately at the base of the pyramid, the first and most fundamental part of the model is achieving product/market fit. . WizRocket, which helps companies increase user engagement by fine-tuning mobile, web, and e-mail notifications, has raised $8 million in new funding from Sequoia Capital and returning investor Accel Partners. The Palo Alto-based startup will use its fresh capital to launch an API for developers and a new engagement platform. Along with a previous seed round from Accel, this brings WizRocket’s total raised so far to $9.6 million.

WizRocket tells TechCrunch that it has served over 350 customers, with its platform reaching more than 20 million unique visitors each week. Developers currently use a SDK to install its tools, which tailor notifications based on users’ demographic data and past interactions, and then analyzes campaigns to see if they actually work. WizRocket’s clients have included Freecharge, Disqus, Pricebaba, and Zovi.com. Developers have to tread carefully, however, because a barrage of notifications might get their app deleted.

OracleVoice: Marketing's Next Big Thing: The Internet Of Things. Recently I wrote about how marketing executives need to be both entrepreneurial and-tech savvy. It might be enlightening to look more closely at the “tech” that marketers need to be savvy about. The ubiquity of digital technology offers a level of interaction with consumers that yesterday’s marketers could not have imagined, from geotargeting to 24/7 connectivity to content consumption across multiple media platforms. It also makes for a lot of relevant data flowing over networks. Yet the world is getting even more interconnected by way of an emerging set of technologies known as the Internet of Things.

The IoT promises to add intelligence to everything from commonplace consumer items such as cars, light bulbs, and refrigerators, to industrial items such as machinery, railroad ties, and agricultural fields. Those “things” can collect and broadcast data across networks, enabling the data to be analyzed to add more value. Google Calendar Concept — Adventures in Consumer Technology. Your calendar will help you better understand your behavior, and recommend adjustments. The first step to changing your behavior is understanding it. The Monthly Summary shown above is a receipt for all of your app activity organized by categories that matter to you, like health, social life, professional development, and personal finances. Note that the Summary doesn’t pass judgement on what you’ve done; it’s just a list of stats.

The next, trickier step is creating a report card that makes encouraging and effective suggestions about what tweaks you can make to be happier, healthier, more productive, and better to yourself and others. Fitbit, Jawbone, Apple Health and a host of other health technology companies are all based upon this same premise, that easier access to and visualization of our data can change our behavior for the better. Calendar is a natural place for an aggregation of individual events.

Real-Time Content Marketing and Engagement Platform | Livefyre. About Atomized | ATOMIZED. Slack: Be less busy. Facebook’s Chris Gomersall Departs For His Marketing Startup Atomized. Chris Gomersall has spent the past three years working with brands and agencies at Facebook, where he was the first creative strategy leader. Now he’s leaving to run his own startup, Atomized. Gomersall told me that he’s trying to solve a problem that he saw again and again in meetings with marketers — when they needed to bring out the creative assets for a campaign, that usually meant looking for a folder full of papers, pointing to art on their cubicle walls or saying, “Let me pull up this email, I think I have a PDF, but it might be old …” At the same time, those assets are being used in an increasingly wide variety of channels and platforms.

Even if you just look at social networking, there are new products taking off, existing networks remain important, meaning that marketers face pressure “to add more and more.” “It’s becoming atomized, with your content or your creative execution broken into thousands of little pieces,” he said. Hence the name of the startup. Connect Your Tools, Process and Team — Relay.

As we get closer to launch, it seems a good time to give a little more detail into how we got to where we are today. Our goal is to enable creators to be more efficient through automation of day-to-day workflows. We began by asking ourselves, our colleagues and some of you what parts of your creative process are challenged by busy work, and why is it that very few tools and services built for designers seem to stick. Designers are their own special snowflakes. While there are patterns that exist in our creative processes, no two are completely the same, and more importantly, very few design tools and services place enough value on the people that make up the process. One of the few patterns we did identify was the power and flexibility of a static image. As we dug deeper, we began to notice that capturing was only part of the puzzle. Lightbulb on...
