Cosmicomics. Natural Style: Ceramic Matters + west elm. By Aaron The influence of natural forms and life cycles dominate the ceramic objects created by Anthony Harris and Gerhard Swart of Ceramic Matters. Based in Johannesburg, the duo have worked as Ceramic Matters since 1997 and have built an impressive collection of work from their South African studio… What inspires you? Nature and our immediate environment. The things that we come into contact with, i.e. when one travels; we have just moved into a 300 year old farm house near Cape Town. How would you describe your work? A reflection of our inner thoughts and sensibility…an awareness of the qualities and the properties of the medium we work in.
How do you achieve such intricate shapes + designs? The elements (Branches) are modeled and molded into the design, reflecting both the qualities of the organic object and providing the necessary elements for a new functional form. Where do you like to work? Our property consists of the original farm house and two old barns. Gráficas - Nantucket's leading gallery specializing in contemporary works on paper. View Debra Fleury’s works featured on Ceramics Now Magazine / Featured in Ceramics Now Magazine - Issue Two "While growing up near the ocean, I spent many hours peering at tiny creatures and looking for clues to their secret lives.
This began a lifelong passion for the the minute details, the battered fragments, and the myriad patterns of organic life. The smallest bits of bone or shell would ignite intense curiosity and imaginative leaps; What was this creature? What did it look like? Clay is critical to exploring these ideas. Most of my pieces begin with a closed form that traps air, or with a simple pinched shape. The intuitive nature of my creative process often leaves me feeling curious about the resulting forms, similar to what I might feel if I had just come upon them in a natural setting. I also create and frame two-dimensional ceramic art work, the inspiration for which comes from the sea and shoreline.
As a ceramic artist, I sculpt forms in porcelain and finish most forms in a crystalline stoneware glaze.
