Practical Synthetic Sound Design

http://obiwannabe.co.uk/tutorials/html/tutorials_main.html Obiwannabe Use the source... Introduction Some hows, whys, and whatjamajigs of native digital synthetic sound design. Introduction for games developers
http://filmsound.org/articles/ninecomponents/9components.htm Loudness The loudness of a sound depends on the intensity of the sound stimulus. A dynamite explosion is loader than that of a cap pistol because of the greater amount of air molecules the dynamite is capable of displacing. Loudness becomes meaningful only if we are able to compare it with something. The sound of a gunshot may be deafening in a small room, but actually go unnoticed if fired in a subway station when a train is roaring past. (A film that use this in the narrative is Sleepers - when a man is shot at the same time as an aircraft is landing)

Introduction to Spectrum Analysis - by David Courtney

ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release) envelopes provide a way to specify how sound synthesis parameters such as filter cutoff and gain change over time. They support the synthesis of evolving timbres and are commonly found in analog synthesizers where the envelopes are triggered by pressing keys on the keyboard. With three ADSR envelope generators, AudioMulch's SouthPole contraption provides plenty of scope for envelope controlled filter modulation. In this post I'll demonstrate triggering the envelopes from their built-in pattern sequencers to create rhythmic patterns of filtering and gating. http://www.audiomulch.com/blog/southpole-expedition-part-3-pattern-sequenced-adsr-envelopes
