This interactive artwork by Random International allows visitors to experience the rain whenever they feel like it.

Based in London, Random International studio creates all kinds of installations that explore behavior and interaction, often using light and movement as the foundation for their artworks. The Rain Room, an exhibition supported by the Arts Council England and made possible by the generous support of the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation for Art, is located at the Curve in the Barbican Centre in London. It's a free installation that runs from October 4 until March 3, 2013. In the exhibit, a 100 square meter grate hangs overhead in the center of the room, from which a continuously falling rain shower streams.

Visitors can experience the pitter patter sound of raindrops hitting the ground and the moisture in the air without actually getting wet. This is the wall clock with small moving gears that rotate a large outer sprocket that tells the time. Instead of hands, the industrial clock has a simple arrow that points to the current time on the large, outer dial, which makes a full revolution twice a day. Powered by the four fixed internal spur gears, the large clock is nearly 2' in diameter, with bold numbers that are easy to read from a distance and submarkings at each 15-minute interval.

Contrary to its prodigious size, this clock is constructed from durable, lightweight ABS with a metallic finish, making it easy to mount on any wall surface. Requires two D batteries. Assembly required. 26" H x 22" W x 4 1/2" D. (2 1/2 lbs.) Lifetime Guarantee The Hands Free Gear Clock comes with The Hammacher Schlemmer Lifetime Guarantee at no additional charge. Should you have any questions, we are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Aleutkina Island - Alaska, United States. Secret Underground Passage Connects Barn to Hidden Home. You might remember the last time we covered this gorgeous subterranean inside out abode high up in the Swiss Alps, but before it was available for rent … and fully revealed with an ingenious secret entrance passage. No one would suspect this old neighboring stone-and-wood barn structure would provide the concealed entry such a cool and contemporary home set back from the road, half-hidden in a hollowed-out crater on the hill.

Plans, sections and 3D diagrams from the designers show how the core structure is tucked into the hillside, while an earth-carved tunnel connects to the main understated entryway. Meanwhile, fresh photographs show off its performance in various seasons and lighting conditions – a warm recessed little retreat tucked cozily under the snow and glowing bright at night. The Villa Vals is a part-time rental, too, so if you are shooting to stay far away from the rest of the world, you could do worse than a quiet town in the remote mountains of southern Europe. The First Zombie Proof House. Somehow, ritual drunk-conversation concerning team captains for the apocalypse has become a major part of the lives of 20-somethings. Having been matured in the Grandaddy-crowned masterpiece film (put “A.M. 180” on and forget that you have a job) 28 Days Later and the best-selling Zombie Survival Guide, we’re all a little too ready to deal with the 2012 zombie apocalypse of our dreams.

“The Safe House,” designed by KWK Promes, starts to get eerily close to something I could work with, if say 200 bludgeoned members of the undead army came over to eat their way into borrowing some sugar. “The most essential item for our clients was acquiring the feeling of maximum security,” begins the designers’ website in the summary of the structure. Who wouldn’t feel safe in a concrete rectangle that folds in upon itself to become completely sealed? Even the windows are covered with a slab of concrete when the structure is on nap time.

Filthy Rich Dream Wish List. One day if when I have entirely way too much money, after many generous donations to needy animals, here are some of the things I shall splurge on… Lazy river inside the house? Um, absolutely. Source My own island yacht? Source This bunk bed to have the top as a reading nook! Source This shower for sure. Source Slides as a means of transportation throughout the house, to go down at least… Source And amazing staircases to go back up! Source Our bedroom, which will be attached to the lazy river, naturally. Source In our backyard we shall have this gazebo-ish area… And, of course, everyone needs a vacation home… Source I think I am being quite practical, don’t you? A piece of heaven on earth | Adorable Home. According to its creators Guz Architects, this amazing building is ‘a contemporary tropical bungalow’.

But we could not agree with this simple description. The Fish House, as the project is originally named, is a piece of heaven on earth, an architectural height, a modern oasis that would impress everybody. The house is located in Singapore, just a few meters from the ocean, and to be in unison with the surrounding environment, it is designed with a huge asymmetrical swimming pool and stunning garden on the roof. In addition to this breathtaking architecture you can add an extraordinary futuristic interior featured by amazing spaciousness, light and comfort. Apart from all the open areas, this home invites the sunlight in also through its huge windows revealing a spectacular panoramic view to the ocean. Are you not just “dying” to live here?! Via. §. Here’s a truly glamorous idea for a pool. A sinking pool! The apparently permanent stone floor in this room literally slowly drops to reveal the pool underneath.

In the raised position, you can walk on the same surface radiantly warmed from beneath. And of course, having the swimming pool convert itself into a floor makes it child-friendly too: this is not a pool that a child can fall into. Once it is sunken it looks like any other indoor pool – as permanent as you could possibly want. You could design this so that it remains as just a shallow decorative pool when not in use, one that is only an inch or two deep. But the best thing about this idea is that it would also make keeping the pool warm a cinch. Radiant floors or the use of thermal mass is climate-friendly design because of the slow release of warmth – reducing energy needs for heating. The super-rich with luxury housing do the most harm to the planet with their luxury high energy use architecture.

Gorgeous Grain: Wooden Bathtubs Really Go with the Flow. Combining German hand-crafting expertise and curved ship hull construction methods, this patterned wooden tub shoots both to satisfy the eye and to soothe any aching back. Alegna specializes in exotic woods like wenge and mahogany that show off grain patterns with stark contrasts or work for lightweight-requiring (e.g. nautical) applications. Some of their tubs form monolithic built-in masses while others are free-standing and come with stone-filled surrounds. All are made to be equipped with jacuzzi features on demand. Nothing too avante garde, to be sure, but attractive all around. Beyond baths, their custom bathroom fixtures and furnishings include sinks and cabinets featuring the same attention to wood grain patterns and craft details, inward-flowing blocks of attractive woods.
