For those who have become isolated due to ill health, disability or social disadvantage, being matched with a befriender can often fill a big gap in their lives.
LinkAge is addressing this issue through its innovative befriending scheme; our volunteers visit older people in their community once a week for a cup of tea and a chat. It’s a simple scheme but it can make a world of difference to both parties. The charity Re:Work has been holding a series of workshops at Broadwalk Shopping Centre over the past two weeks to make and restore old furniture to sell on, and raise funds to support children who have been excluded from school. Re:Work, which has a shop Re:Store, in Filwood Broadway, started life as South Bristol Community Construction Company in 1999, set up by a group of concerned residents, including Mary Smith OBE, who also launched KWADS (Knowle West Against Drugs), which offers advice, counselling and therapies to families affected by drugs.
The group wanted to tackle the problem of teenagers playing truant and getting into trouble, while at the same time helping regenerate Knowle West by refurbishing derelict buildings. Reworkltd.org.
