Mobile Site Experience Throwdown: US vs. UK Posted on Monday, March 3rd, 2014 by Adam Keyes Print This Post Categories - Featured, Mobile, SEO The Search Agency UK recently published a mobile scorecard report evaluating the mobile sites of the FTSE 100.
The report replicated The Search Agency’s previous report on the Fortune 100 in the US. Both the US and UK reports used the same set of five criteria to assign a total score out of five to each mobile site – load speed, site format, calculated download speed, social media presence, and app presence. The US slightly outperformed the UK in most of the key criteria. With a highest possible score of 5, the top companies in both the US and the UK leave a lot to be desired in the mobile experiences they provide to users.
The full mobile scorecard reports are available in our research library. Tags | companies, Fortune 100, FTSE 100, mobile devices, Mobile Experience, mobile scorecard, SEO, UK, US. In a world where device fragmentation is increasing, taking a mobile-first approach is yesterday's thinking. There's no doubt that the smartphone has changed the way we all engage with the world around us. We're all glued to apps on our mobiles (Flappy Bird anyone?). And website owners have seen the steady, inexorable rise in mobile traffic to their sites, which spawned the inevitable rethink about how web experiences are delivered on mobile devices (yes, I'm looking at you responsive design).
So it isn't surprising that the world is talking about making sure you take a 'mobile-first' approach. But I disagree. If you're adopting a mobile-first approach, you're in danger of soon coming up against the same problems that you faced as your audience started the move from desktop to mobile – namely an experience that isn't optimised for the device that the user is using. Why? And if their experience isn't optimal, they'll quickly find your competitor, who does give them an optimal experience. Mobile Sitelinks Now Available on Bing Ads. Understanding The New Mobile Advertising Benchmarks In an effort to find out what forms of mobile advertising are truly the most effective, DG MediaMind created a benchmark study to measure the success of different types of interactive mobile banners and ads. Their Mobile Performance Benchmarks report was produced by collecting data over a 12 month period beginning January 1, 2013. Researchers analyzed over 1000 mobile advertising campaigns, which resulted in over 2 billion impressions.
DG MediaMind found that interactive or expandable banners designed for mobile devices such as some strips, slides, adhesion banners, and pulls had a far greater effect and click through rate than standard “polite” banners. They found that the industries that create the most engaging and compelling mobile banners are the entertainment industry, the electronics industry and the automotive industry. The report also showed that mobile-optimized marketing videos were more than twice as successful as interactive or expandable banners. Are You Mobile Ready? Find Out with Shel Holtz's Checklist.
