Ning. The Importance of Elgg in the Future of Learning. When I survey the landscape of educational tools, I come to the following conclusion: Elgg is the most important tool, currently available, in shaping the future of learning. (Disclaimer: I was on an advisory board for Elgg when it first started, though the board never really did much, but I mention it now so it looks like I might be cool). Why Elgg? I’ve used Elgg for various projects – for teaching at Red River College, for running a social network at Duke CE (both in 2005), and now with The Landing – an enterprise-level install at Athabascau University (initiated by Terry Anderson and Jon Dron). The tool has its bugs, but has developed substantially in the last few years. It is a central blog/wiki/twitter/flickr/craigslist/you-name-it do-it-all social network that is a) open source and b) not facebook. It is essentially a PLE – though diehards will disagree with me on this.

They recently announced a hosted Elgg service.

Me gusta: Me gusta Cargando... Elgg -- a personal learning landscape. Introduction Elgg is an open source Web application combining elements of weblogging, e-portfolios, and social networking to create what its authors term a "personal learning landscape" (Tosh and Werdmuller 2004b). The application promotes learner-centered expression through "personal web publishing", while facilitating the formation of peer-to-peer (P2P) learning communities in which knowledge sharing, conversation, and reflection can take place.

As the use of personal web publishing and social networking tools has been an emerging practice in the field of CALL (Stanley 2005, Godwin-Jones 2005, Ward 2004, Dieu 2004, Campbell 2004, Godwin-Jones 2003, Campbell 2003), the appearance of Elgg is relevant. While not designed specifically for language learners, its features provide students with a means of using English in personally meaningful ways.

WPMu was just updated to a long awaited Version 2.7.1 which has, in turn, triggered events in the BuddyPress realm. The new WPMu version offers a number of important improvements making it a significant improvement. As a consequence, BuddyPress has finally been able to release Version 1.o.

Upgrading from WPMu 2.7 to 2.7.1 was a cinch. First make up your files and database , then simply click the upgrade notification and the new files load. Upon upgrading , the first thing you will notice that the horizontal on the top of the admin page has disappeared. The controversial feature is now an optional plugin. This upgrade goes yet further in polishing and un-cluttering the administrative interface. I’m going to start from scratch on my WPMu/BuddyPress installation soon and look forward to renewing my BuddyPress and Elgg comparisons.
