(Or, Where do you get your ideas from?) Writers get asked this question all the time and to be honest it embarrasses them a little. The answer is we don't really know and we're not keen to examine the process too closely in case the plot fairies don't like being stared at and fly away. Basically, I suspect, writers have a slightly different way of looking at the world. We all have images, conversations, memories - the ingredients of Story -- swilling around inside our heads. It's why we all think we have a story inside us.

Inside the writer's brain, however, incidents and memory combine, mingle with overheard comments and gather momentum, finally becoming someone else's story. I have to confess, however, that sometimes the "magic" needs a bit of a prompt. A lot of writers walk. So what else can you do? You could phone a friend or maybe your sister or cousin. Go fifty/fifty and brainstorm with a writing friend. Ask the audience.

The short decade that took his name was the last gasp of Georgian exuberance before the staider morality of the Victorian era.

The Prince: The Prince, "Prinny", set the tone for the period with his lavish expenditures and indolent lifestyle. War: The British army had been fighting the French on the Iberian Peninsula since 1809. Literature: The Regency period was the heyday of the Romantic poets, led by the scandalous Byron and Shelley and the more mild-mannered Keats. Society: London was the center of the Regency universe. The Other Side: Life during the Regency was not all glamor and excitement. The End: George III died in 1820 and Prinny ascended to the throne as George IV. The high point of reaction occured in 1819. Writing Advice from Science Fiction author Jeffrey A. Carver. Many people have emailed me asking what advice I might offer to an aspiring writer. Here are a few thoughts. A lot more could be said, obviously, but I hope you'll find the following useful: Read, read, read. Read widely and voraciously. Since you're looking at my web page, you probably have an interest in science fiction or fantasy (SF/F). Seek out the best in the field. Practice, practice, practice writing. If you're wondering about a course to pursue in college, and you think you want a career in writing, choose the school that you think will give you the best all-around experience.

Write from the soul, not from some notion about what you think the marketplace wants. If you can stand the thought of not writing, don't attempt a career as a writer. Don't plan on making a lot of money from your writing. Seek out constructive feedback on your work. If your work is of publishable quality, sooner or later it will sell. Don't send me your manuscripts. Be determined, and be thick-skinned.
