Joshua Ton/National Science Foundation Barry Hayes at the Geographic South Pole. It was cold last week in the Midwest. An arctic blast sent temperatures plunging to near-record lows: -32°F in International Falls, Minn. , the self-proclaimed Nation’s Icebox. Brutal cold. But that’s nothing compared to winter at the South Pole, which is beyond brutal. With an elevation of two miles above sea level and with a complete absence of sunlight, the South Pole has an average winter temperature about -72°F. http://wordplay.blogs.nytimes.com/category/Numberplay/

Many resources are available online for studying the prime factor decomposition of a number. From CIMT there are Interactive Exercises on Prime factors and on Highest Common Factor and Lowest Common Multiple. From Spencer Riley’s TeacherLed the Prime Factor Tree resource provides a very attractive prime factor tree showing the prime factor decomposition for any number from 2 to 99.

Number Tree

How Does the Number Tree Grow? As the numbers descend from the heavens and attach themselves to the growing tree, they look for a specific number on a branch point. The largest divisor (factor) is what they choose. So, for instance, take the number 20. It has the following divisors: (1, 2, 4, 5, and 10). (The number 20 itself is not considered because it can't branch from itself :) So, it chooses 10 as its branch point - as you can see in the tree. http://www.ventrella.com/numbertree/
Conceptua Math was conceived three years ago with a mission to complete a K-8 curriculum that is visually interactive and that serves students and their teachers. by Judy Faust Hartnett A whole new generation of digital math products is focused on aligning math learning with the Common Core State Standards. If used properly, then these products can be a great asset to school districts. While researching this topic, Conceptua Math caught my eye because unlike other products, it has not only the student, but the teacher in mind. http://edtechdigest.wordpress.com/2012/12/11/interview-arjan-khalsa-conceptualizes-math-fluency/

This is a list that I created in response to a request that I recently received as direct message on Twitter . A couple of these resources I found through a search in the Diigo community. If you don't have a Diigo account or if you do but you have never searched the community bookmarks, I recommend giving it a try. Who Wants Pizza?
