The group unanimously perceived a lack of skills among its clientele: Students are routinely flummoxed as to how to search for or evaluate the sources they need in their work. But even as librarians are poised to teach information technology through classes, online tutorials, and one-on-one sessions, actually laying hold of student time and attention depends on faculty support—and that is not always easy to find.

The Executive Order declares that information is a valuable resource and strategic asset for the Nation. We couldn’t agree more. Lasers used to scan California missions to preserve them forever. In spring 2011, engineers using a tripod-mounted laser shot 50,000 beams per second at Mission Dolores, San Francisco's oldest standing structure.
Over the course of 21/2 days, they repositioned the tripod more than 120 times, bathing every nook and cranny of the mission and its grounds with the emerald-green laser. The goal: create 3-D digital blueprints of the historic landmark to make sure it remains part of California's landscape forever.Up and down the coast of the Golden State, engineers from Oakland-based nonprofit CyArk are in a race against time, using laser-scanning technology to digitally preserve an important part of California's heritage: the 21 missions, four presidios and three pueblos of the California Mission Trail, commonly known as El Camino Real. "The missions are critically important to the history of California and of the United States," said CyArk director Ben Kacyra, 72, a former civil engineer. Bookboard Launches App To Encourage Children To Read More By Limiting Their Choices. Bookboard, a subscription service for children’s books, has launched its iPad app, which gives parents and children streaming access to its library of books.
Like many kids apps startups, three former Adobe employees, Mike Fitzpatrick, Nigel Pegg, and Fang Chang, founded the company out of personal needs as parents. They came together to develop a service that encourages and develops a child’s love of reading. Bookboard’s library includes more than 300 books targeted at children ages 2-7. Parents can set up individual profiles for each child, track progress, and adjust the reading difficulty of books. Please nibble a madeline in honor of those timeless tombstones of information that have, for centuries, been our guiding stars through the darkness of ignorance. All is not well for the book. As I’ve written before, I think the printed word will soon enter the domain of enthusiasts and, in the case of educational materials, the catastrophically underfunded. I can see a day when bookstores are few and far between and act more like vinyl record shops than fonts of information. To be clear, that’s not the case yet but it will be shortly.

But regardless of how each library uses their social media accounts, the end goal is the same: to get more students to visit the library. We ended up with a list of 442 college and university libraries, which were evaluated based on their level of activity on various platforms.
