Learning how to adjust exposure to get the effect you’re looking for is one of the things all photographers have to eventually learn, and one of the easiest examples of this is taking a photo of a silhouette against a sunrise or sunset.
In the photo above, I exposed for the sky. “Exposing for the sky” means I told my camera that I wanted to capture all the beauty and color variations of the sky and not to worry about letting enough light in to see my baby. By “telling my camera” I mean that I made the necessary adjustments and tweaks to my camera settings to make sure the sky was properly exposed. In this case, I took the easy road and simply dialed back the exposure compensation until it let in less and less light…to the point that I was satisfied that it was capturing the sunset accurately. A storm was rolling in, so it was both windy and grey, but we worked it fast and got it done! I love each member of this family… from Mr. S who dances Just Dance wildy with his daughter at her birthday party, to the brothers D & D who are complete contrasts of silly and serious, to little M who generously shares her sparkle shoes with my Audrey, to Mrs. S… who was clearly and graciously put in my path last year and we gravitated like magnets and now I wonder how I ever lived without her. ***PS- NO chickens were harmed in the making of these family images. ;) AmyRo. We live on a little wannabe farm on the outskirts of Kingman AZ (about 100 miles south of Las Vegas) and chickens are a big thing around here. We have about 40 of them and have raised most of them ourselves since they were tiny, newly hatched chicks.
This sweet girl was hatched here at our house – which, by the way, is an AMAZING thing for your children to witness. As summer comes to an end and with all the fairs going on this is an appropriate engagement session to share with you all. Jamie and Eamon are have been dating for 10 years, these guys got together back in the eighth grade! A true love story right? Well as I said with all the fairs going on and what not I thought I must do an engagement session at one.
I just knew all the colors and scenes would not disappoint and boy was I right. Sure we had to deal with the carnies and wow they’re a unique breed to say the least but all in all it was a kick ass session. I’m stoked to be shooting their wedding next year so in June of 2010 you’ll have to check back with me to see the pics, until then enjoy their engagement session and Happy Labor Day!
