Slam Dunk Festival announce Local Bands Competition. Slam Dunk Festival are looking for 6 unsigned bands to play their local leg of the Slam Dunk Festival.
How does this work? Well Slam Dunk have split the country into six sections: North, South, Midlands, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Bands will compete for a space on each show based on their location. For example, if the band are from Cornwall, they will be in the running to play the South date only. Get it? March 2010. You don’t need a record label to sell your music any more. If you know how, you can easily get your music stocked in iTunes and Amazon, as Sean McManus reveals. Ten years ago, nobody would have thought a computer company from California would be the dominant force in the UK music industry. Few would even have bet that it would become the most important company called Apple in the industry. For artists on major label contracts, the rise of digital could be frustrating. Or go it alone, perhaps? iTunes and Amazon aren’t interested in dealing with artists directly, but a rich ecosystem of intermediaries has sprung up.

Writing songs and learning to play them well is just the beginning – how do you get anybody to actually listen to your music? The internet is a big help. With Tumblr, Bandcamp, YouTube and Facebook it's reasonably easy to maintain a web presence. Free software such as Audacity has made it much simpler to record a demo, while BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio do a great job of unearthing the best new music being made by virtually unknown acts. Despite all this, there are thousands of acts toiling away unheard in bedrooms and garages across the country. From next week we'll be launching a new series on unsigned bands.
