Laura To Logan. A decision was made today by the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Medicare division, to cover gender confirming surgeries for patients suffering from Gender Identity Disorder (GID), the diagnostic term for being a transgender person.
This is a landmark decision, opening the doors to equality for a huge number of people who just want to feel like everyone else. I am not one of those people. Don’t get me wrong, I have the diagnosis and the drive to feel at home in my own body is there in spades, but I’m not one of the millions covered under Medicare.
