Do you like the idea of exit slips, but don’t have time to grade them all outside of class? Do you find yourself wondering whether or not students caught the main point of your lecture? Do you wish you could go paperless for quizzes and other activities or even just reduce the amount of paper you use? Do you want to engage your students more with your lessons?
Well, if your students have smartphones, tablets, or computers in class, then Socrative can help you out. Socrative is free! Maybe you have seen or heard of student response systems where instructors are able to request information or ask questions in class, and students use clickers to submit responses immediately. Once logged in as a teacher, choose “quiz,” “quick question,” “space race,” or “exit ticket.”
If you have not tried it before, try Socrative today. How will you use Socrative in your classroom? The Yellin Center Blog: NCTM’s Illuminations is a Fantastic Resource for Math Instruction. After sifting through a seemingly endless list of math apps and online math games recently, we were pleasantly surprised and energized to discover Illuminations. While much of the content we viewed on other websites was more of the same, Illuminations was, well, illuminating.
A resource developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is bound to be impressive and insightful, and Illuminations, we discovered, is both. Illuminations offers 108 online activities that teach a multitude of skills, from counting to calculus. With material for students in, and teachers of, kindergarten through 12th grade, there is almost certainly something here for everyone. Some activities are very simple, geared toward helping students to internalize a single concept. Coin Box Factorize To teach why a number can have multiple pairs of factors, Factorization provides a 100 square grid and invites students to draw rectangles. Student Choice in the Classroom. Welcome Karianne Politowski as this week’s guest blogger! At Voki, we love more than anything sharing the authentic ways in which teachers are using Voki to enrich their classrooms. See how her students used Voki! Take it away Karianne! Voki is a tool I can use no matter what grade level or subject I am teaching. My teaching career thus far has been anything but boring.
I have rarely taught the same thing two years in a row. For the first project of the year using Voki, I let the students choose any backgrounds, and characters they want. Another reason I love Voki is because the students can easily embed their projects on their blogs. I am trying to incorporate student choice into my classroom as often as I can. Thanks, Karianne! In the classroom than the eLearning Contributor who developed the training on Kahoot! Himself? Guest Blog Post by Ron Farrow, eLearning Contributor Student engagement and motivation seem to be at the top of every teacher’s list when it comes to successfully reaching students. Fighting student apathy can be one of the greatest struggles a teacher can face. Luckily, technology has provided us a world of resources that allow us to engage students like never before. Check for Student Understanding with Pear Deck - From Jennifer Carey.
This post first appeared on Free Technology for Teachers. As more schools go 1:1, teachers often feel challenged to make their traditional lessons and activities more interactive. One of my favorite free tools is Pear Deck because it allows a teacher to take a PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or PDF and incorporate various student activities to check for understanding and engagement. Pear Deck is free for students and teachers (with a higher end, paid premium model) and it fully integrates with Google Apps for Education. When you sign in to your Pear Deck account, create a new interactive lesson by selecting “New Deck.”
This can allow you to do a quick check for understanding or have students engage with the material as you present. A Lever and a Place to Stand: Pear Deck = Presentations + Student Response System. When I got my first set of student response clickers, I admit that I started using them to mock them. It only took a few uses, though, before I was hooked. I especially like the clickers when I am teaching a new type of problem or formula in chemistry because I can quickly see how many students are mastering or struggling with a concept and clear up misconceptions as they happen. This summer I participated in the Beta for Pear Deck, a new presentation and student response platform. It's hard to try out a student response system in the summer . . . without students . . . so I was excited to try it in my classroom this week.
Pear Deck integrates with Google Drive, so I tried it out with our Chromebooks today. You can build presentations from scratch in Pear Deck or import Google presentations. After clicking Create a New Deck, click the New Slide button. You can add prepared student response items too. ClassDojo. Curriculet - Revolutionizing the way students engage with books. I spend a great deal of time looking up stuff. They live in a constant state of exploration; seeking out information and resources that will stretch their students' (and their own) understanding of the world.
Nevertheless, there exists a perception that teachers are resistant towards adopting new technologies in the classroom. At the progressive preK-8 independent school where I support faculty in their integration of technology, educators live and breathe creative, student-centered teaching. My experience has shown me that these teachers, like most teachers, consistently seek tools that will improve and expand their students' learning experience and/or improve management of student work. Many educational technologies struggle to break into the classroom because they have yet to clearly meet teachers' needs.
