Pysanky - Ukrainian Easter Eggs. These are a traditional craft in Ukraine, with a history of thousands of years. The method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with wax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage. The symbols and colors used are rich in meaning; many pre-date the arrival of Christianity, and have had Christian interpretations layered on afterward. This (1996) is the third year in a row that I've done pysanky. Before that, the last time was about twenty years ago. Okay, 1997 and 1998 went by, and although I made a few pysanky, I didn't have enough time to make more than a few, and had no time to digitize pictures or anything.

Creating Ukrainian Eggs is one of my specialties and you can find a large selection of them in my Etsy shop. I wanted to take a moment and give you a brief tutorial on the actual process of creating these eggs with bees wax and dyes.

Ukrainian eggs are something that I started in the spring of 2009. I was looking for an interesting new hobby to try and you know how I love to try to bring back vintage crafts with a twist. My starter kit consisted of three sizes of kistka, 10 different colored dyes, bees wax and some patterns and instructions. Are you new to the Sitcom? My designs originally came from ideas off the internet, but now my daughter and I come up with our own designs. Start with fresh eggs. You will need to blow the inside of the egg out and then clean the outside shell with a mix of white vinegar and water. This is a kistka. But now for the magic.

I learned the basics of quilling years ago but never advanced to varsity level projects and rarely found the inspiration to pull my supplies out of hiding.

Fortunately, this ancient craft (also knows as paper filigree) seems to be making a resurgence and now inspiration abounds! I don't claim to be an expert quilling artist, frankly, I'm not good at all!! But I am excited about this craft and wanted to share my very basic knowledge. Quilling is a craft that's done by wrapping paper strips around a quill to form a coil. . - Quill - Paper strips - Foundation for your art (I use card stock) - Glue - Pin or toothpick for glue dotting (optional) The quill is a small round tool with a forked point at the end.

To begin a coil, place the end of a paper strip between the two prongs of the quill. Next, you twist, twist, twist the paper strip around the quill! You can form tight coils by gluing without releasing the paper from the quill. Here is a looser version of a coil. Pretty incredible, huh?! A simple reminder to breathe.... Quilling style. Part of my inspired words series: breathe.

I have been feeling a bit hectic lately and I myself needed the reminder to slow down, take a breath and wind down a bit. I was kind of going for a movement in the quilling, something I have been working more on recently. I also love the shot of purple in this piece.. it was a last minute decision that I am really happy with.
