There's a girl there, and he sees her.) Hey man, it's me. Um, I just got back into town. I thought maybe I could bum a ride off you or something, but that's cool. Alan Watts - Is It Serious. Is It Serious? by Alan Watts. Is It Serious?

Is It Serious? by Alan Watts

By Alan Watts (This sublimely playful essay on creative mythology is Chapter 2 of Watts' brilliant book Beyond Theology, published in 1964, now unfortunately out of print. The book offers a startling revision of Christian theology/mythology through the lens of Hindu mythology and cosmology! - Craig) Alina Simone: This is how the world ends? Cosmologist Alex Vilenkin gave a lecture at the Hayden Planetarium in Manhattan earlier this year called “The Universe and Beyond.”

Alina Simone: This is how the world ends?

I attended the talk with a few of my friends, and we all had the same reaction: “That was awesome! I didn’t understand a thing.” I understood even less of the lecture than the rest of my friends, which pretty much makes me the poster child for regression toward the mean, because Alex Vilenkin is my father. As a primer, the website explores connections between many individuals, works, and concepts instead of offering narrow specialization. Scholars appreciate the need for both narrow and broad analyses, which serve different purposes. When you read each section, do not expect narrowly focused depth — by definition, this website offers a survey of the topics and individuals important to existentialism. To locate book-length analyses of one thinker — or one work by that individual — use the complete bibliography. My passion is creative writing and how “creative” works affect social change. Do not go gentle into that good night. Dylan Marlais Thomas was born on October 27, 1914, in Swansea, South Wales.

Do not go gentle into that good night

His father was an English Literature professor at the local grammar school and would often recite Shakespeare to Thomas before he could read. He loved the sounds of nursery rhymes, foreshadowing his love for the rhythmic ballads of Gerard Manley Hopkins, W. B. Yeats, and Edgar Allan Poe. Although both of his parents spoke fluent Welsh, Thomas and his older sister never learned the language, and Thomas wrote exclusively in English.

Thomas was a neurotic, sickly child who shied away from school and preferred reading on his own. By December of 1932, he left his job at the Post and decided to concentrate on his poetry full-time. In 1934, when Thomas was twenty, he moved to London, won the Poet’s Corner book prize, and published his first book, 18 Poems (The Fortune press), to great acclaim. He was a journalist, playwright, novelist, writer of philosophical essays, and Nobel laureate. Though neither by advanced training nor profession a philosopher, Camus nevertheless through his literary works and in numerous reviews, articles, essays, and speeches made important, forceful contributions to a wide range of issues in moral philosophy – from terrorism and political violence to suicide and the death penalty.

Existentialism

Absolute Individuality and Absolute Freedom. The Existentialist conceptions of freedom and value arise from their view of the individual. Since we are all ultimately alone, isolated islands of subjectivity in an objective world, we have absolute freedom over our internal nature, and the source of our value can only be internal. II. The Existentialist View of Human Nature. Existentialism is defined by the slogan Existence precedes Essence. 1. 2. 3. 4. The Existentialist View (We create our own nature.): We are thrown into existence first without a predetermined nature and only later do we construct our nature or essence through our actions.

This slogan is opposed to the traditional view that Essence precedes Existence, according to which we are seen as having a given nature that determines what we are and what our ultimate purpose or value is. The Traditional View (which Sartre argues against): The human situation for the Existentialist is thus characterized by:
