Just a Minute is a BBC Radio 4 panel show where panellists are asked to talk for one minute, without hesitation, about a topic. This game can be adapted fantastically to a whole host of ESL classroom situations and contexts. I’ve played it with adults, teens, and even young learners. Depending on the class and level, you may have to scaffold the task significantly, but with the right presentation, students can enjoy the game too. To play, you’ll either need to create topics in class or you can use our ready-made Just a Minute topic cards found below.

This quick activity is fantastic for students preparing for official exams. Whether it’s Cambridge, IELTS or Trinity, students are expected to speak individually at length from B1 level and up. Round Robin Story: A Fun ESL Writing Activity for All Ages.

Round Robin story is a fun ESL activity that focuses on speaking and listening. It’s great for all ages and can also be used as a TEFL writing activity as well. Keep on reading for all the details you need to know! Round Robin Story TEFL Activity Skills: Listening/Speaking (or Writing) Time: 10 minutes Level: Beginner-Advanced (some basic reading skills are helpful) Materials: Whiteboard, marker To begin, have the students sit in a large circle. Start them off with a “Once upon a time _____” sentence. The story then builds as it travels around the room. When all students have added an idea, you can either add a sentence to end it, if necessary, or ask for volunteers to finish the story. Round Robin Story (Writing Variation) To make this into a writing activity, have each student get a piece of paper. When time is almost up, tell students that there are only two more passes so that they have to wrap up the story.

I’ve also put the ideas for the different stages together into one file for easier reference: I hope you find it useful! Roll & Explain! Here’s a quick post with a tweak to two popular speaking/writing activities. The game can be played in small groups or as a whole class (B1 and above.) Roll&Explain.pdf One student rolls two dice four times: one to choose the person in the situation, another one for the action, a third one to decide on the place, and finally a fourth one to determine the time.

Focus on grammar first by having the student come up with a grammatically correct sentence that describes the situation. Once the situation is clear, the student comes up with a (more or less) plausible explanation for it. I’ve written the worksheet into this randomiser for easier use in online sessions or for whole-group work in the classroom! Sea Tea Improv | Hartford, CT Comedy.
