I’ll try and keep the rest of my DASH report a bit more concise than last year since I have a lot of other things to catch up on writing about as well. The rest of these posts will contain massive spoilers (though they will be blackened out), so try to avoid them if you want to solve the puzzles on your own. In my last post, we had just found our teammates and gotten registered. GC were all dressed in hospital scrubs and lab coats, following an apparent medical theme. The DASH 5 website featured a DNA strand in the logo and some micro-text that said “Catch DASH fever!” The materials we received consisted of two large envelopes.

A good example is Doomsday Device, which required teams to solve a scrambled Rubik's Cube they were issued on a bridge in Crockett, California. About the Universal Longshot Scoring SystemULSS is a method of scoring that uses the time it takes a team to solve each puzzle, a "par" time for each puzzle, and whether or not that team took any hints.
Each team is awarded the par value for each puzzle they solve, and if a team should finish in fewer minutes than the par value, they get "extra credit" points for each minute under the par value they are. If a team takes a hint, they lose whatever "extra credit" points they might have earned, and 10% of the par value when they finally complete the puzzle. This way, teams in the lead take a bigger penalty for hints than average teams, and encourages teams who are at the "par" time already and still stuck to take a hint and get on to the next puzzle.
A scoring caveat...Not all cities used the ULSS to determine winners. The Game (treasure hunt) The Game is a non-stop 24–48 hour treasure hunt, puzzlehunt or road rally that has run in the San Francisco Bay and Seattle areas since 1973. Its teams use vans rigged with power and Internet access and drive hundreds of miles from puzzle site to puzzle site, overcoming often outrageous physical and mental challenges along the way, usually with no sleep. Teams in recent games have been required to walk around the roof of the Space Needle, find a puzzle hidden in a live rat, and circulate a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide from local ecosystems while dressed in superhero outfits.
Game founder Joe Belfiore has described the Game as "the ultimate test for Renaissance men and women. " Two more events were held in the Bay Area before Joe Belfiore moved to Seattle to work for Microsoft, taking the official "The Game" with him (although the San Francisco Bay Area people still consider their games to also be "The Game").
