Smart glasses let nurses see veins through skin. News November 20, 2013 11:50 AM ET Computerworld - Epson and Evena Medical today unveiled smart glasses that allow nurses at the bedside to see "through" a patient's skin to the vasculature beneath. The companies claim the new Eyes-On Glasses System technology makes even hard-to-locate veins easy to find for intravenous placement. The Eyes-On Glasses System is based on Epson's Moverio Smart Glasses Technology, an Android-based, see-through wearable display launched earlier this year that allows users to interact with apps and games. Evena Medical, a maker of high-definition imaging for precise venous access, said the new glasses incorporate its multi-spectral 3D imaging and wireless connectivity. The glasses work by using the multi-spectral lighting to see veins beneath the skin and two digital cameras that transmit images wirelessly using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or 3G connectivity. On-board data storage allows documentation of a procedure, including videos and photos. .

We made an appointment and unknowingly entered into the contentious arena of how to respond to potentially worrisome prostate cancer tests. Originally used to track the progress of cancer treatment, the PSA test is now widely used to detect possible signs of early-stage prostate cancer. But it is an imperfect tool — so imperfect, in fact, that recently the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which is charged with tracking medical practices and treatments, said the test should no longer be part of routine standard of care. The test does more harm, through unnecessary surgery, than good, the group said.
The recommendation, which reversed the task force’s previous position, has been extremely controversial, with many urologists, cancer doctors and prostate cancer survivors decrying it, saying the PSA test had saved lives. All of this, though, was well in the future. For now, all we knew was that his PSA was elevated. The question was what to do. A puzzling about-face The second opinion.

A new and exciting discovery that can give hope for late stage and complex cancer patients is here. For years patients and doctors have been asking the question “why does chemotherapy only work for some patients and why sometimes not at all?” For example a patient may try a different chemo regiment over and over or may “respond” to chemotherapy and have a 30% shrinkage of a tumor only to find it returns even more aggressively later. Envita’s new form of treatment aims to eliminate this problem altogether which means that many patients will become cancer survivors.
This new treatment was designed and developed by Envita’s medical team to outperform conventional therapies by using each patient’s specific tumor information and genetic profile. The current model and approach being used by numerous cancer centers and hospitals is the “germ theory.” New scientific studies reveal that unlocking the genetic codes for each patient’s cancer means a more successful treatment and outcome.
