NUXEO Open Source ECM. Metadata standards - Wiki. Metadata standards are requirements which are intended to establish a common understanding of the meaning or semantics of the data, to ensure correct and proper use and interpretation of the data by its owners and users. To achieve this common understanding, a number of characteristics, or attributes of the data have to be defined, also known as metadata.[1] [edit] Metadata is often defined as data about data.[2][3][4] It is “structured information that describes, explains, locates, or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, use or manage an information resource”, especially in a distributed network environment like for example the internet or an organization.[5] A good example of metadata is the cataloging system found in libraries, which records for example the author, title, subject, and location on the shelf of a resource.

Metadata is usually categorized in three types:[6][7][2] Available metadata standards[edit] Sources: [11] [12] [5] [7] [13] [14] [6] [2] [15] See also[edit] Dublin Core® Metadata. Metadata - National Archives of Australia. We commonly create and use metadata but may not realise that we are doing so. When we add a subject to an email or insert a date on a letter we are adding metadata. We use structured metadata fields such as title, author or date to search for records in an EDRMS.

When we find the information, we rely on metadata to help us understand the business context, including the dates of the email exchanges, the people involved in an email thread, and links to other information. What is metadata? Information and records need to be described so that people know what they are about, understand their context and purpose, and can find them easily when they need to. It allows users to control, manage, find, understand and preserve information over time.
