If you layer right it's actually not that cold and if you go to the smaller hills lift tickets are dirt cheap, the staff are really nice and welcoming, and there's also the benefit of no lines. Actually during my winter break I went to Austria to a smallish hill in Tirol/Tyrol to a place called Kaunertal Valley, the staff were really hospitable and cheerful (and one of the waitresses kind of looked like Catherine Bell), lodging was quite cheap and tickets were only 80 EUR for 3 days.
