The island is 70 km2 large and has a population of about 1100 people. Compared to most other Cycladic islands the island of Serifos is quite green and it has very good beaches. The name Serifos comes from the Greek word "sterfos" which means something like "barren" or "not fertile" but the island does not live up to that reputation. Although the island of Serifos has much to offer it is less popular than it's close neighbour Sifnos island. The small and pretty authentically Greek Cycladic village of Livadi has a nice sand beach (the port beach) and a harbour, both with pine trees for shade.

The island of Sifnos is the most popular destination for visitors of the western Cyclades, but according to "Cycladic standards" it is still reasonably quiet. In peak season there are besides the ferries from Pireaus also direct connections with the more busy island of Paros in the central Cyclades or to Milos, Folegandros and Santorini. The island is popular because of its hilly landscape which has typical white cycladic villages dotted around it, and because of several good beaches. The highest mountain, the Profitis Ilias, measures 680 meters. There are many dovecotes and many beautiful churches on Sifnos. You will also find a number of monasteries (Moni Taxirachis, Agios Sostis, Moni Vounou, Moni Vrissis and Moni Chrissopigi) and remains of antiquity, such as various Hellenistic towers and the ancient fortified acropolis Agios Andreas (on the route of Appolonia to Vathi ), which dates from the Mycenaean period (13th century BC).

There are three main villages on the island Karavostasi, Hora (Folegandros town) and Ano Meria. Hora is one of the oldest traditional medieval towns in the Cyclades; the buildings stand close to one another creating the external wall of the castle (kastro). The Hora, closed to car and motorcycle traffic, has a unique centre of three squares in a row, with trees under which to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat in a quiet, romanticatmosphere. It is no exaggeration to describe Hora as one of the most aesthetically picturesque, traditional villages of its kind.

The view is said to be second only to that of Santorini, though fans of Plaka on the island of Milos might argue. Karavostassis is a small seaside settlement 3 km southeast of Hora with whitewashed houses in the Cycladic style of architecture and a pebbled beach for nudists or not. It is 32 km2 large and has around 650 inhabitants. It is concidered romantic and an "up-market" island for people with a bit of money to spend.

Because of its remote position in the islandgroup it is still relatively quiet and has retained most of its traditional character. Especially in the high season it can be hard to find a place to stay because of the limited number of accommodations. Hotels, apartments and studios can be found in Karavostasis (the port) and in Chora, but as these are both only small villages accommodations quickly fill up in Juli and August. The first impression you will get when you arrive in Folegandros by ferry is that it is barren and rocky.
