Mieux que la Delorean, le premier et indémodé album de ces Australiens gavés de French Touch avait entamé le retour vers le futur. C’est au début des années 80 que l’on retrouve le trio de Melbourne, avec un album plus couillu et abouti que le premier Dystopia . Minuit n’y sonne pas l’heure des bangers compressés mais celle des ambiances morriconiennes trempées dans la soupe cosmique ( Cannibal Freeway ), tandis qu’il y a du Pink Floyd ( The Great Beyond ) et du Of Montreal ( Fade to Red ) dans cette electro-pop aux claviers gagnés par la moisissure et aux refrains conquérants, matière de singles indiscutables ( Vital Signs et son break tribal) comme de titres en mal de débroussailleuse ( Winds of Fortune ). La métamorphose n’en demeure pas moins saisissante.

The Crystal Axis is Midnight Juggernauts' second album - their first since Dystopia launched the Australian trio into a vortex of global intrigue. Befitting the DIY ethic of their self-owned and operated Siberia label, Midnight Juggernauts again opted to produce the album themselves, with engineer Chris Moore (TV on the Radio, Yeasayer, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars) facilitating. An album that veers from percussive, hypnotic grooves to luxuriant jams, via rich Morricone-esque textural diversions, walls of sound, and 70s AM melodic forks, The Crystal Axis is a 50-minute symphony of synth-rock invention.
Sur la pochette de son album, Agnes Obel ne sourit pas. Elle pose : cheveux tirés vers l’arrière, regard bleu-vert austère, pull de grand-mère. Le fond est sombre, le visage pâle, l’air grave : pour un peu, on croirait observer un portrait mormon, une photo échappée de la série Big Love . Mais non. Agnes Obel, que les plus chanceux ont pu apercevoir sur la scène de la Boule Noire lors du dernier Festival des Inrocks, est danoise, et vit à Berlin depuis quelques années, avec deux pianos dans son appartement.

Such is the exceptionally sparse nature of Agnes Obel’s debut album that it slips by almost unnoticed lest you lend it a distraction-free, focused ear. It is highly advisable you do so: the compositions that lie within are slow, sombre, sepulchral even, but not without a sense of occasionally singular beauty. A case in point is Riverside, which follows the instrumental Falling, Catching as the first song proper. Entirely built around piano and voice, its soft pleas for solitude and escape are utterly disarming, Obel’s mournful lyric as chilled as the body of water she’s inexplicably drawn to. Philharmonics is a resolutely early hours affair; a kind of Scandinavian counterpart to the British duo Felix’s wonderful You Are the One I Pick of last year. But where that record generally eschewed structure in favour of dark flights into the surreal, Obel keeps things tight and lean here.

En 1978, les puristes brûlèrent en autodafé quelques langues mortes et pochettes de vinyles : les Rolling Stones avaient trahi, passant à la disco le temps d’un pourtant très cool et moite Miss You . Plus de trente ans après, de jeunes godelureaux de Philadelphie, aux riffs hérités de Keith, viennent eux aussi à New York se faire produire dans la fournaise disco : chez le grand James Murphy. Il y avait énormément à attendre de la rencontre entre les guitares débraillées, crâneuses et nonchalantes des jeunes Américains et la science du beat assassin du cerveau de LCD Soundsystem. Off! was formed in Los Angeles, California in late 2009 by Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris, Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba. The idea to form the band came after Coats had worked as producer on a Circle Jerks album which fell apart."Fembots have feelings, too." When we first heard Robyn sing those words, on a single promoting what would become a three-volume set of mini-LPs all bearing the name Body Talk , it was easy to focus on the Swedish pop singer's quirky sense of humor. But on this new full-length edition, "Fembot" also reveals itself as a compelling statement of purpose.
