Bedtime Math Problem | A new math problem every night.

http://bedtimemathproblem.org/ A hat tip to Ken B. and Mary W. for reminding us that today is Pi Day! That’s because today is 3/14, a nice representation of our favorite magical number, 3.14. Pi (π) is the ratio between the distance around a circle and the distance across it: the distance around the edge will be the width times 3.14159265… When you roll a ball or a wheel, it’s amazing how far it goes on one roll, relative to the little circle you started with. For today’s BMPs, you can round off π to 3 to simplify the math (and for those who don’t multiply yet, it’s a great way to learn the concept: have them add the number to itself, then add it on one more time). If your child wants to use 3.14 instead, go for it! Wee ones (counting on fingers) : If at dinner a ladybug takes 2 minutes to walk across the middle of your plate, how long will she take to walk once around the edge?
