M Shed

The 1950s transit shed, originally called M Shed, on Bristol’s historic wharf has been transformed into a museum. Thought-provoking and fun, M Shed challenges the perceptions of what it has meant to live here over the centuries through the recollections of the people who shaped the city. M Shed explores the city’s history from prehistoric times to the 21st century.

Stories about the city and its people have been discovered through working with experts and communities across the city – a process that will continue for the life of the museum. Rich collections of objects, art and archives also play an important part in bringing those stories to life. Historical Walk: Bristol's Burning! 1831 Riots. Historical Walk: Old City. Old City Heritage Trail

With the walls no longer visible, their route is little understood or used, and the rich architectural heritage of the Old City often goes unnoticed. The guide explains the history of the area and its buildings and outlines those aspects of the social, religious and, above all, the mercantile life of the city that have greatly influenced the last 900 years of its development - and still set the context of today's bustling independent business community. Alterations and additions to a hideously extended, but originally very pretty farmhouse in St Catherine’s valley for Xa Sturgis and Anna Benn who were the most fantastic clients. The extension used in part materials from the demolished barns, and the cladding was designed to conceal the proportions of the existing extension while pull apart on the new bit to reveal key views into landscape. It is a very modest, very vernaculary thing really, and surprising that it generated a great of interest. We were rather embarrassed doing this for Xa at the same time as Eric Parry was doing the Holburne for him, with a budget something like 20 times the cost per m2. Gas and Electricity Comparison. We jumped on the train this week to Bristol to catch up with Nora the French owner of The Bouton Shop.

We first heard about her when she was named in a recent version of Homes and Antiques as a “go to destination” by one of the featured home owners. The shop is based off the beaten track in Bristol, down a very pretty street, alongside other independent businesses such as a vintage clothes shop and a bespoke vibrant interior designer. As we stepped through the door of the period, double-fronted shop we found ourselves in a beautiful airy space with Nora’s workshop through at the rear for all to see.

Overview Guerrilla gardening is, in its basic form, a type of anarchic direct action where gardeners identify a disused, neglected or abandoned piece of land - which they do not own - and use it to grow either crops, flowering plants or to create wildlife areas. The aim is simple: to rescue land from perceived neglect or misuse and give it a fresh purpose. Some guerrilla gardening activities are secretive and technically illegal, sometimes carried out under the cover of night.
