Records, CDs, cassette tapes, even MP3s and FLAC--nothing about any single music file or disc holds any real aesthetic value. (No one would collect records if they didn’t play music). So we’ve long relied on cases and album art--superfluous packaging we’ve come to cherish--to make a Beatles album feel like something momentous, even when you can’t hear it. But what if the music medium itself were as gorgeous as the sounds it contained? That’s the basic idea behind Evil Eye, a project by Belgium collective Indianen during their time at the printmaking-focused Frans Masereel Center. It’s a screen printed record that, rather than containing random designs somehow associated with its music, is actually showing you the exact music you’ll hear.

The designs are the waveforms, precisely read by an LED to amplify the music within. “Technically, the project is very straightforward,” Indianen explains. The record itself contains eight tracks, each which runs in a 1.3-second rotational loop. Military & Defense. There's the burn mark on his arm from a dollop of molten G.I. Joe, the line on his toe from a misdirected firework, and the cut on his thumb from a knife used for "carving a spear for marmot hunting" — a life story threaded together by scars. Remember This? Known as the "Frank Lloyd Wright of computers," Gordon Bell has spent years preserving all aspects of his life.

Dwyer (2011 Sept 23) Why don't insect wings break? Researchers from Trinity College Dublin have shown that the wings of insects are not as fragile as they might look. A study just published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE now shows that the characteristic network of veins found in the wings of grasshoppers helps to capture cracks, similar to watertight compartments in a ship. "The desert locusts are the marathon-flyers of the insect world," says Dr Jan-Henning Dirks, who studied the properties of the wings together with Professor David Taylor at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

"These grasshoppers can fly for days across deserts and oceans with wings ten times thinner than a human hair". During these long journeys the wings of the grasshoppers have to withstand hundreds of thousands of wing beats without failure. What is their secret? Like all insect body parts, the wings are made from cuticle, which is the second most common natural material in the world. Philip Howard: Four ways to fix a broken legal system. During the last half-decade, the Fund for Peace has been putting together the Failed States Index, using a battery of indicators that determine how stable (or unstable) a country is. As a result, we have taken the top 60, or should we say worst 60 Failed Countries of the World. But as much as we admire the stats and numbers there is no better way but as the photos that demonstrate the degree of failure of a country.

The best test is the simplest one, which is that you’ll only know a failed state when you see it. And these photographs captured by the all seeing eye of the camera are, as they seem, true postcards from hell. As an example, we’ll make a rough start with country No.1: Somalia. Hint: Click on image to see the larger version Somalia has topped the Failed States Index for the last three years — a testament not only to the depth of the country’s long-running political and humanitarian disaster, but also, to the international community’s inability to find an answer. Children in the First World have a lot of choice when it comes to scientific toys. In fact, there are whole stores devoted to selling things like robotics kits, ant farms, and simple microscopes.

In the developing world, however, such fancy toys are relatively scarce. So, what's an adult to do if they want to get the local children interested in the sciences? Well, in the case of Arvind Gupta, they show the kids how to make scientific toys from trash. View all Gupta's story began in the 70s, when he was an engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology. Upon graduation, he went on to work at Tata Motors, where he helped to build trucks. Gupta proceeded to devote his life to designing toys that demonstrate scientific principles, that children can build for themselves out of cheap or free parts. Today, he is part of the four-person team that runs the Children's Science Centre, at India's Pune University. "Every child is born a scientist," he said.

What if you could come back from the store, extract your haul, and throw your grocery bag in the garden to compost away? Scientists have created a sturdy, versatile, completely biodegradable alternative to plastic that could just make this crazy dream real. And it’s made from insect skeletons. Javier Fernandez, a Spanish materials scientist, and his collaborators at the Wyss Institute, have created the material they’re calling "Shrilk," which mimics the architecture of arthropod exoskeletons. Grasshoppers and other similar bugs have an exoskeleton that is strong enough to support their innards, but light enough to allow the insect to fly. Shrilk, made from the proteins in these natural materials, also adopts a similar duality: It has the strength of an aluminum alloy, but is half its weight.

It’s also completely biodegradable. Fernandez was experimenting with chitin--found in insect shells-- for use in bio-compatible microelectronics. How Not to Fall Asleep in Class. IBM Research Boosts Battery 500 Project with New Materials Partners Asahi Kasei and Central Glass to enhance electric vehicle lithium-air battery innovation SAN JOSE, Calif. – April 20, 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that two industry leaders -- Asahi Kasei and Central Glass -- will join its Battery 500 Project team and collaborate on far-reaching research with the potential to accelerate the switch from gasoline to electricity as the primary power source for vehicles. In 2009, IBM Research pioneered a sustainable mobility project to develop lithium-air battery technology capable of powering a family-sized electric car for approximately 500 miles (800 km) on a single charge.

As partners in the Battery 500 Project, Asahi Kasei and Central Glass bring decades of materials innovation for the automotive industry to the team. "These new partners share our vision of electric cars being critical components of building a cleaner, better world, which is far less dependent on oil," said Dr. Bats rebound in NY caves first hit by white-nose.
