Shipping Container Homes

Approximately 30 million steel shipping containers are in existence, filled and floating, or standing empty in a port. 8 feet wide by 8.5 feet high, and either 20 or 40 feet long, the steel shipping container has been the globally standardized transportation module since 1956. Sending empty containers back to their origin is expensive, so often the containers sit unused in ports. If one lives near a port with abundant containers, then the energy required to transport the steel container to a local building site will be lower than an inland location, far from the port. But buyer beware, as that used container might have been sprayed with insecticides or fungicides inside, and coated with lead or heavy metal paints on the outside.

Here’s a look at some of our favorite shipping container homes across the world. 1) Shipping Container Guest House, San Antonio Container house with green roof by Poteet Architects. Tools like Evernote make organizing and finding information really simple.

A little known hack from Japan to get your notebook organized

Yet despite that, I still often find myself using the humble notebook to jot down valuable ideas, especially when I’m on the go. However notebooks are hard to organize your ideas. You either split your notebook into several sections for each ‘category’ and end up wasting valuable pages in the quieter sections or you just write your ideas as they come along making them hard to find later on. If this sounds familiar then you are going to love this little hack I was taught here in Japan by a friendly salariman. It’s a little messy, and not something I’d use all the time but for the right subject could come in handy. Introducing the Highfive notebook. The Art & Animation of Tatsuyuki Tanaka. A post on comic creator David Hine’s tumblr today brought to my attention some brilliant work by Tatsuyuki Tanaka, animator with Studio 4°C.

The Art & Animation of Tatsuyuki Tanaka

Although Mr.Tanaka has a website the information on it is few and far between but you may be familiar with his work on Batman:Gotham Knight (storyboard supervisor and conceptual designer) and Green Legend:Ran (key animator). However you might not be aware that Tanaka was the man behind Tetsuo’s bio horror arm mutation in the legendary Akira. Since then Tanaka has worked on a myriad of films, most recently for 4°C .He also devotes much of his time to producing elaborately beautiful illustrations which he collected in an art book called Cannabis Works in 2008. Below I have collected a few brilliant examples of his work including his entry for the 2007 anime anthology Genius Party entitled Toujin Kit. Making a powerful programmable keypad for less than $30. Build a Fibonacci golden section gauge for $1.

Throughout the years I've read a lot about the golden ratio from a design perspective.

Build a Fibonacci golden section gauge for $1

The Greeks noticed there was a common ratio in nature that was pleasing to the eye. This ratio is 1:1.618 (i.e. 1 to 1.618) and is referred to as the golden section. Today, you will find this golden section reflected in design of buildings, logos, products, artwork, etc. I wanted to create a durable measuring gauge that would allow me to refer to this ratio when designing things that I build with wood, metal, software and other materials. The gauge in this instructable allows you to measure drawings or on screen items and keep the scale and proportion of elements in a design. The gauge has 3 points, which always retains the ratio of 1 to 1.618, even as you expand and collapse the gauge. WOOD magazine has great video regarding the golden section with examples of the golden section in nature (your body), greek architecture and an example of how to use it to design furniture.
