Un compteur « intelligent » est un compteur disposant de technologies avancées, dites AMR ( Automated Meter Reading ) qui identifient de manière plus détaillée et précise, et éventuellement en temps réel la consommation énergétique d’un foyer, d’un bâtiment ou d’une entreprise, et la transmettent, par téléphone ou courant porteur en ligne (CPL), au gestionnaire des données de comptage (en France, mission confiée au distributeur par la loi du 7 décembre 2006 [ 1 ] ). Les compteurs « intelligents » peuvent notamment établir des factures en temps réel et repérer les postes qui coûtent le plus au client. Ils peuvent éventuellement l’informer de microcoupures ou de pertes sur le réseau électrique. Du point de vue de l'entreprise, ils permettent des gains de productivité important via la suppression des emplois de personnels chargés du relevé des compteurs.

L’ADEME a ouvert un appel à manifestation d’intérêt pour des projets de démonstrateurs de recherche sur les réseaux intelligents intégrant des énergies renouvelables (smart grids). Ces démonstrateurs visent à préparer les conditions d’insertion massive des productions décentralisées d’énergies renouvelables dans les réseaux électriques en expérimentant les options de stockage à différents niveaux centralisés ou décentralisés des réseaux et à expérimenter les dispositifs intelligents permettant de reporter les demandes liées aux différents usages tout en améliorant l’efficacité énergétique globale de ces systèmes électriques (transport, distribution, consommation). Cet appel à manifestation étant clôt le 30 novembre, on constate que cet AMI a rencontré un succès important auprès des entreprises impliquées sur cette problématique.

For several years, the energy industry has been claiming that nuclear power is a green, cost-effective solution for global warming, and now it is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve 26 new power plant proposals. Meanwhile, some in Congress are calling for the federal government to support the construction of 100 new reactors over the next two decades. No doubt, expanding U.S. nuclear power beyond the current 104 reactors could help combat climate change. Nuclear plants -- which do not emit carbon dioxide during operation -- currently generate about 20 percent of U.S. electricity, and building more could reduce the 50 percent market share held by coal plants, the nation's primary source of global warming emissions. But is nuclear power a solution we can afford? The short answer is no.
