This Year, Civic Participation Gets You an “I Voted” Foursquare Badge. As we saw in 2008, the U.S. elections are a great time for web companies to showcase their wares. This year, Foursquare is getting in on the action, encouraging civic participation with the introduction of an “I Voted” badge, a digital version of the sticker often handed out at polling places around the country.

To pull this off — and create at least some sort of verification around voting — a number of organizations have partnered up, including Foursquare, Rock the Vote, Pew Center, Google and the Voting Information Project. Eric Friedman, director of business development at Foursquare said in a statement, "We're excited to work with such an amazing group of partners to harness the power of Foursquare to drive civic engagement through the ‘I Voted’ badge. With over 4 million users, Foursquare is now at the scale where checkins communicate a larger trend and we're excited to make this data more accessible to the public. Senate Arts Report Card - Dirty Dozen | Americans for the Arts Action Fund. Have you ever brought home an F grade on a report card? What about in the arts? Hard to imagine. Well, our U.S. Senators brought home their grades, and although they weren't graded on their paintings or musical scales, they managed to fail the arts. The Arts Action Fund graded the members of the U.S.

Whether they blatantly speak out against the arts, say they support the arts and then vote another way, or simply don’t know the economic role the arts play and the well-being they provide in their state, each of the twelve Senators we have featured received an F grade on their support for the arts. There are also many who aced their support of the arts and should be commended, and we'll be sharing some of those champions with you in the coming weeks along with more stories from the Congressional Arts Report Card.

Unlike the report card you used to bring home though, an F grade affects more than just these Senators or their states. So will these Senators improve their grades next time? Your Best Shot 2010. A submarine sandwich, also known as a sub, grinder, hero, hoagie, Italian sandwich, po’ boy, wedge, zep, Hodgson, torpedo, bocadillo or roll, is a sandwich that consists of an oblong roll, often of Italian, Spanish or French bread, split lengthwise either into two pieces or opened in a “V” on one side, and filled with various meats, cheeses, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces. The sandwich has no standardized name, and many U.S. regions have their own names for it and in where they found at least 17 different names for the same product.

The usage of the several terms varies regionally but not in any pattern, as they have been used variously by the people and enterprises who make and sell them. The terms submarine and sub are widespread and not assignable to any certain region, though many of the localized terms are clustered in the northeast United States, where the most Italian Americans live. The term hoagie originated in the Philadelphia area. Elphaba Yourself. Elizabeth Edwards dies after battle with cancer. Social Media Examples From Edelman’s New Media Academic Summit 2010 « The PR Post. August 1, 2010 by Tiffany Gallicano Edelman generously hosted a conference at New York University for public relations professors to explore recent case studies and trends in how digital media are transforming public relations practices. This conference was co-hosted by New York University and Syracuse University. Many thanks goes to Edelman’s extraordinary event planners: Latraviette Smith, Caitlin Prentice, Terri Peterson and Christopher Contompasis, as well as the Syracuse University team, headed by Brenda Wrigley, who put together the teaching roundtable discussion. Richard Edelman kicked off the conference with an engaging presentation titled “The Digital Reset: Communicating in an Era of Engagement.”

Last week I read an interesting article in the Huffington Post about publishing work on Kindle by J.A. Konrath. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for awhile now, so I took a stab at it over the weekend. I’m happy to report it was really quite simple. I didn’t feel like putting up one of my awful novels, so I went ahead and put up a short story I ran on the site back in 2008 called Jeremy Shade and Spatula Inn.

Adding Jeremy Shade to Kindle Putting up the story involved, signing up for the Amazon Digital Text Platform and then uploading the text of the story. Amazon allows you to upload in one of several formats, including Word, HTML, or epub. Once everything is submitted, Amazon does some magic on the files to prepare them for the Kindle and then it goes off for a quality check. Less than 48 hours later, my story was available for sale.

I did feel a little odd about selling just one story. One thing that is interesting about the Kindle platform is versioning. A whole new world?
