I’d argue that we all face ethical dilemmas every day, particularly in and with social media channels. They may be small (should I say this or that on Facebook) or they might be bigger (no, I can’t pepper the web with positive reviews of that client’s product or service). As you probably know, I’m working on a book with my friend and colleague, Michelle Honald.

We’re focusing on the ethics of social media in one of the chapters. I’d love to hear your stories and examples of ethical dilemmas that you’ve faced working in public relations (or any type of communications). You can leave actual or hypothetical examples in the comments or email me. I’m not (necessarily) looking for case studies, I just want to make sure I cover the reality of ethical decision making for those of you working in social media. photo by yewenyi. Katie Paine’s Dirty Dozen Public Relations Measurement Mistakes. What we didn’t learn in school, but did learn from our mistakes. It's that back-to-school time of year again, so we thought we'd focus on learning—as in learning from your mistakes. Or in this case, learning from our mistakes. Here at KDPaine & Partners we have a long-standing tradition: Every month we reward $50 to the person who makes the biggest mistake in public relations or social media measurement.

“Biggest” being defined as the one we learned the most from. (Here is a previous Measurement Standard article about public relations measurement mistakes and how to learn from them: How To Really Mess Up Your PR Measurement Program: Ten fatal PR research mistakes and how to avoid them.) So, we figured, why keep all this great learning to ourselves? In no particular order: 1. I can’t tell you how many people have asked me to make a “minor” change to either the publication list, search terms, or methodology. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Great Food Truck Farce! | For the past six weeks we’ve watched Tyler Florence traveling the country with a culinary caravan to determine who has the best food truck business in what Food Network called the Great Food Truck Race.

Each week we have been amazed at how much better the Nom Nom Truck team was than everyone else in the “race.” Five challenges, all won by Nom Nom. Let’s face it, if this were an actual contest then it ended two weeks ago. Nom Nom has clearly demonstrated that of the seven food trucks in this “competition” they were far and away the best. They have won every single challenge coming into the finale so if they didn’t win it can only lead to one conclusion.

If the rules of your so-called contest mandate that you throw out everything leading up to this point then it was never a fair contest. The rules as established in the first episode stated simply that the team that sells the most, wins. Food Network has had a history of contests where the math does not add up. So, you watched it. An old actor I know would watch a plodding drama and growl, "If you watch closely, it almost moves. " That's the feeling I'm getting, taking a look at the federal government's flimsy and fitful crackdown on news outlets and experts that fob off public relations drivel as news. I raised the subject earlier this week in a column about Elizabeth Werner, the perky spokesmom who pitches toys during news broadcasts on local stations around the country. She is just one of a pack of paid touts presented to viewers as if they were independent experts. But does anyone care?

The public has gotten pitch-drunk from relentless salesmanship, on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and even their favorite sitcoms and reality shows. TV news producers have to fill airtime with staffs a fraction the size they were just a few years ago. Federal regulators speak loudly but carry a small stick — seldom invoking regulations that let them punish television outlets that don't disclose paid promotions. I just want to demonstrate from my own personal experience what I see as the lack of practical social media training in communication and public relations degrees.

Over the past four years, my professors continually reinforced that social media and web communication would be the wave of the future. However, I believe the future is now! Although my degree highlighted the importance of using social media as a method of communication, not one of my professors knew how to use Twitter , foursquare or any other tool except for Facebook .
