It’s daunting to step back and look at the sheer number of content-based sites that cover the spectrum of interests on the planet. For some, I know this can make it feel like it is too late to join – that others are so far ahead there is no way they’ll catch up. It may appear this way on the surface, but looks can be deceiving. The truth is, there is not a single niche that’s too crowded for fresh thinking. Larger players have no defense against something that comes out of left field. Certainly, established players have advantages such as oceans of information feeding the engines and large subscriber bases sharing their content. Here’s a few strategies for a brand or blogger who is unique and able to bring fresh thinking to the table: Specific stories Let the larger players have the big, obvious stories. You’ll first need to supply your Ping.fm application key to the script. Just right click on the little monkey and go to User Script Commands, and select Set Ping.fm App Key . When prompted, provide your key. Please note that the app key is stored in your Firefox browser settings. Do not use this on a public computer , because it would be easy for someone to obtain your app key from the browser. I’ll be submitting the app to Ping.fm for approval so that anyone can use it. If developing Firefox add-ons wasn’t such a pain (for me), I’d write it as an add-on. Retweeting on the rise, linking and commenting is declining and. Recently Louis Gray had a post on his blog called As Retweeting Rises, Linking Continues to Decline. The post went live on July 4th and I let it set in my open tabs on my browser all weekend. I was really trying to decide how I felt about the post and whether I was going to respond or write something myself. As you can see, I decided to write my own post on the subject. However, I think there is more then just retweeting and linking involved. What I struggled with the most was trying to decide if one of those activities was actually more important then the other. And that is just a short list of the post we have done on the three topics. The problem is not that one is more important then the other. We tend to realize that if we want to add value to our twitter stream that we need to make it a point to retweet those tweets we feel our followers might benefit from.

Setting aside the fact that number of followers is a poor gauge of influence (see our Twitter report for details), I wanted to know how many followers a suggested account gains by appearing on the list. I took the set of accounts that were added to the suggested users list during the last two months, recorded their number of followers the day before they made the list (Initial # of followers), and tracked what happened a week, 2 weeks, and a month later. From an initial set of just over a hundred accounts, I was able to gather sufficient data (using Twitterholic and Twittercounter) on 80+ suggested users. On average†, a suggested user gained about 53,000 followers a week after first appearing on the list.
