Scanning.
Edmund and Sophie's Photo Page: Holga Tips. A few things absolute beginners should know about Holga So you've never used a Holga before, but you vaguely heard about this toy camera or you just saw it at the local photo store and were charmed by the sheer bubble-gum quality of it. Getting blurry shots when you shoot inside? Night shots all browny looking or washed out? Got no detail in clouds or snow or on beaches? Get the right film for the job. Although a very nice photo, this 100 speed film (even on a nicely sunny day) wasn’t fast enough to capture the action without shake and blur, a 200 or 400 would have been better. I won’t name names, and it’s not the first time I’ve seen this, but I saw a very nicely composed photo of a pet on the site today that the author had commented underneath “still getting blurry shots…”. There are many things that can cause this sort of problem, but if you focussed properly, it boils down to one thing.
Please activate JavaScript to see this gallery This was an overcast day, by no means rainy or dark but the use of a 400 speed film mean the film was fast enough to get a ‘tack sharp’ picture. Choose the right film for the job. Here a personal favourite, Lomography CN800, was used. All film is rated for something called speed. DigitaLIZA 135 Film Scanning Mask: Better Scans with the DigitaLIZA.
I was a bit skeptical about the Digitaliza since I thought I can scan sprockets on my own. But since getting a sprocket capable camera, I considered giving the Digitaliza a try. What a nice surprise it was! Shooting sprockets is fun but having them scanned by my local photo lab was disappointing. They seem to have trouble scanning films that have unusual sizes like Sprocket Rocket or the Horizon Perfekt.
So I was convinced to get a Digitaliza and try to scan my own sprockets! Using the Digitaliza is easy especially with the instructional videos available online. First, I scanned my films using basically adhesive clear tape, the colors were not very good and the photos were blurred. Well, you can be the judge of that. Please activate JavaScript to see this gallery Do yourselves a favor. The DigitaLIZA 35mm Scanning Mask holds your 35mm negatives in place so you can scan them, sprocket holes and all!
