Moving Beyond the Page: Homeschool Curriculum for Preschool through Middle School. Class Dismissed: It's Not Homeschooling, It's Unschooling - Cincinnati Magazine. Cincinnati Kids, City Wise, Schools Unschooling is a) The best way to learn; b) A new education trend in Ohio; c) A way to get school credit while playing Minecraft; d) All of the above. Like money that grows on trees, it seems like a child’s impossible dream: not to go to school today, next week, next season—to stay up late, play Minecraft, read comics, climb a tree, with permission to boot.

But for some children this is no fantasy. As the number of homeschooled children grows nationwide, so too does the number of “unschoolers,” families whose children follow no formal curriculum, unless the children themselves devise it. Instead of going to school, the kids plan their own day and largely do what they want. Photographs by Aaron M. At the same time, trends in homeschooling in general indicate steadily increasing numbers that government agencies, such as the Census, attribute in part to disaffection with Common Core and the No Child Left Behind Act (the standards movement). And it worked. Think Careers. Awesome Library. Education On Demand | Turn Reading Time Into Learning Time. Want to turn TV time into learning time? Free streaming videos from services like Netflix and Amazon are a boon to parents committed to a well-rounded education for their children—and not opposed to a little screen time on occasion. How cool is it that we can now harness the power of the Internet and decades of film footage to buttress our children’s learning?

As E.D. Hirsch Jr. has argued for a quarter-century, the early elementary years are the ideal time to introduce children to the wonders of history (natural and otherwise), geography, literature, art, music, and more. By providing a solid grounding in the core domains of human civilization, we are providing two wonderful gifts for our children: A store of knowledge that will help them better understand the complexities of our universe as they grow older and a rich vocabulary that will make them strong, confident readers in these early, formative years. – Mike Petrilli, President of the Thomas B.

Helping Students Motivate Themselves to Learn. Every day, teachers face students who are apparently uninterested in learning. This is a challenge that must be overcome, because every student must be included in meaningful classroom activities. But the students seem to subconsciously decide each day what they will and will not learn. They are much more likely to grasp and retain what they encounter in class if they are motivated to do so. What is Motivation? Motivation is a person’s willingness to make a certain effort toward achieving a specific goal under specific circumstances.

A Comfortable Environment In creating those circumstances, the educator should know that what his/her students most value in the classroom are relationship, trust, and respect. Know the Students The teacher should get to know the students well, listen to them, and seek their input regarding the lessons and curriculum in general. Engage Them with Choice Students like to be engaged. Connect the Lesson to Life References. Blogs, Articles and Videos from the World's Top Thinkers and Leaders | Big Think.

The machine is us/ing us What does it mean to be information literate in the 21st century? We are living in a cognitive age where globalization challenges us to develop innovative thinking, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking abilities. We need to become better at finding, evaluating, analyzing, synthesizing, and sharing information - skills and knowledge we refer to as "information literacy". Information literacy is a means to express personal ideas, develop arguments, refute the opinions of others, learn new things, or simply identify the truth or factual evidence about a topic. David Warlick* describes these new skills as moving from the 3Rs to the 4Es.

It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. TEDTalks began as a simple attempt to share what happens at TED with the world. Under the moniker “ideas worth spreading,” talks were released online.

They rapidly attracted a global audience in the millions. The intent of this project wiki is to address: How can the TED talks be used as springboards for further discourse, exploration, reflection, and action? The wiki was initiated independently of TED by Jackie Gerstein, but the TED team in New York know about it and are excited by its potential. The individual pages (see sidebar) not only contain the original TED talks, but also additional references, resources, and activities about the topic and/or speaker. Why study TED? I thought they were boring and had to force myself (for the most part) to do them. I had a rebellious attitude and heart toward many of the old-fashioned stereotypes of women. Why should I be the one stuck with the laundry when I had been changing diapers all day and chasing toddlers? Why should I bother to mend pants when I can just go out and buy another pair? Now that I’m older, I’ve grown into an entirely different mindset. I find when I do things His way that I’m filled with a contentment and direction that was entirely unknown to me years ago.

There are no excuses why a healthy wife and mother can’t take care of her home. The first step is nurturing the right heart & attitude concerning your daily tasks and the things you still need to learn. It’s a gift to get to stay home. The second step is starting with something – no matter how small! The fourth step is to LEARN! What do YOU need or want to learn? Free Homeschool Deals: Affording the Homeschool Life. Hodgepodge - BBC Bitesize - Dance Mat Typing. The Accidental Unschooler | Pioneer Woman Homeschooling. By Kristen Chase. I’m not quite sure how it happened, but I think I might be turning into an unschooler. Okay, so that’s not completely true. As someone who is quite aware of the different homeschool philosophies, what I’m doing isn’t exactly unschooling.

It’s more like “flying by the seat of my pants” schooling. Does that even exist? I added in a couple of activities — just one for each kid, mind you — karate for my son, a ballet class for my 3-year-old daughter. I don’t feel like I’m some crazed taxi driver zipping all around town. But when my kids can’t even find their school books and I don’t even know where they are, then I know that I’m in big trouble. Then the neighbor was saying how my daughter told her daughter that it only takes her 20 minutes to do her school work and she’s free for the rest of the day, which isn’t completely true, mind you.

I obviously haven’t done a great job of teaching my daughter time. Once I get a chance to breathe, I know that my kids are learning. Furious Shepherd's Homeschool Page. Freely Homeschool. Joyous Lessons: Scheduling By Week. Now that we're more than a month into our first term and I've had a chance to "test drive" our plans, I'm going to do a few posts on what school looks in our home this year, with two third graders and a kindergartener. (And, of course, four little ones too! Since my preschool-aged kids outnumber my school-aged kids right now, our plans are influenced by them as well.) First up: our weekly schedule sheet. :: I added a column for my kindergartener's daily work. :: I organized our weekly assignments into various categories as part of moving my older two toward independence. :: I put two checkboxes next to each of their readings, one for having read it and one for having narrated it. I use the back of the sheet to note people to add to our timelines, places to look up, and topics to discuss.

As I mentioned, our work for the week is broken into various categories: daily tasks for each child, with four checkboxes next to each (we school four days a week) weekly readings we do together. A Simple Way to Organize Files at Home. When organizing a home office or household command center, it’s important to have a very organized filing system. Papers and important documents need to be organized in such a way that every family member can use it. Unfortunately, most file systems only make sense to the person who does the filing. That, my friends, is not smart! As yourself this question: Will my spouse, my children, or other family members know where to find important documents in my absence? If the answer is yes, then you are good to go! If the answer is no, then let me tell you about a filing system that has completely revolutionized the way I organize papers.

The Freedom Filer In the past, I struggled knowing where to file almost every single piece of paper that came into my house. If a document could be filed in 2 or more categories, I never knew which one to choose. File folder names can make or break a filing system. Trying to figure out the perfect file name had me constantly tweaking my personal filing system. Meet Penny - Being Mom: striving to balance family, time, and budget. [REVIEW] Teachers who enjoy playing any types of games or competitions in their classes will enjoy Game Show Soundboard (iTunes link), a free sound effects app that I found while preparing for an all-school assembly earlier this year. I was the host to a trivia show which featured the a group of students vs. selected teachers and our principal.

Simply typing in “sound effects” in the App store, I was pleasantly surprised to see a large variety of apps. Most of them were free, while some were around 1-2 dollars. I chose Game Show Soundboard, (which can be enlarged to fit the iPad screen) and the sound effects worked well. I asked my co-worker doing the sound to attach his iPhone (he had downloaded it prior) to the sound system. He was therefore then able to, at the tap of a button, immediately play sound effects based on correct and incorrect answers given by the contestants. Here are some of the sound effects that this great free app has: Classroom Use Like this: Like Loading... Home School Innovation. The Peaceful Mom -
