Double Crochet Hack - mamacheemamachee

I was familiar with two ways to turn my work when working double crochet rows. You either count your beginning ch as a stitch or you don’t. Here is a picture of my edge when NOT counting my beginning ch as a stitch: The edge is bumpy and blah. Here is a pic of when I count my turning ch as a stitch: You get those pesky little spaces, and who of us likes to work a stitch into their beginning chains? And here is a pic of the way that I’ve been doing it for the last couple years. And here it is..it’s a simple trick but I think it works great! Clean Edge Double Crochet You will not count your turning chains as a stitch for this pattern.

This just means that you will always work your first st of your rows into the first st of the previous row and you will not work a stitch into the turning chain at the end of your rows. Special Stitch: Ch any number of dc’s +2 Repeat Row 2 until you like what you have. Double Crochet Hack - mamacheemamachee. Jessica Kenenske: Very Simple Crochet Blanket. Have you ever wanted to make knitted socks but were a little scared of the process? Well, then I have some really interesting stuff for you today. Imagine there is a way how to knit socks using straight needles only and all you have to be able to do is to just knit and purl. Doesn’t it sound great? It definitely did sound gorgeous to me once our teacher taught us how to make these when I was about 12 years old. Quick Striped V-Stitch Cowl (Free Crochet Pattern!) Quick Striped V-Stitch Cowl (Free Crochet Pattern!)

(Which is actually today, as I write this and am scheduling it to go up on the 26th, because blogging on Christmas day totally makes sense to me and is not at all a waste of family holiday time.) This will come as a big shock to exactly zero people, but I have a rather large yarn stash. And while I love my sweet precious stash, I think it’s time I start finding ways to use it up instead of always going shopping for new yarn every time I have a new project to crochet (I think this could make a good 2014 goal for me, actually—using up my yarn/fabric stash instead of letting it continue along its current course of slowly but steadily swallowing my house whole).

So when I got the urge to make myself a new winter cowl recently, my goal was to come up with a pattern that would utilize what I already have instead of giving me yet another excuse to go yarn shopping. And if you need to go yarn shopping to make this? Bee and Buzz: Easy Peasy Granny Crochet Cowl Pattern. (Which means I’m also counting back nine months and thinking ‘yikes! I was at that New Year’s party too!’) Our crochet teacher Julie Kadoi came up with this soft, squishy and totally addictive free crochet pattern, the “Beachcomber Baby Blanket”. This cuddly blanket uses a classic shell motif and five fun colors of Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton.

Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton is by far our favorite cotton yarn, and because we stock EVERY colorway of Worsted Cotton we had a lot of fun putting together fun and unusual baby blanket palettes. With crochet blankets you don’t need to worry about size, and they work up quickly which means you actually have a fighting chance of getting them done before the baby outgrows all your handiwork. (Julie’s color picks shown above: Dandelion, Bone, Caribbean, Ash and Flamingo) Crochet Kitchen Towel Pattern. So if you haven’t already noticed from the granny squares and t-shirt yarn rug, I’ve been on a bit of a crochet kick lately.

It’s a bummer for sure! One thing I’ve been dying to crochet are some new kitchen towels. I’m trying to green up my life, both for saving money purposes and saving the environment purposes, but one thing I’m horrible with is using too many paper towels.

These guys use a modified linen stitch, which leads to a really thick, beautiful weave that should hold up very well with regular kitchen use. Free Crochet Pattern...Hearthside Cowl! Free Crochet Pattern...Hearthside Cowl!

It's a very long drive across Australia's Nullabor and as we are always in a hurry to get to Victoria and then in even more of a hurry to get back, it becomes an exceptionally long time to be sitting in the car.

We don't stop off and sight see so it means a lot of knitting time. And I mean A LOT. I usually knit socks - something quick and easily portable that can be put away quickly at refuelling stops as I dash out to pay for fuel and seek chocolate, but I was already knitting a sock and wanted something else.My daughter had mentioned that she would like a pair of boot toppers and I had every intention of making her some whilst we were on holiday. But you know what it's like with knitting - there's always other projects on the go. Now, however, the Nullabor stretched out for 1000's of kilometers before us for the drive home so I took up a ball of beautiful Bergere de France yarn in Sport, a set of 4.00mm needles and set to work coming up with a pattern.

Materials. Blocking it Out. Today's topic: BLOCKINGI'm not talking about blocking those telemarketers repeat phone calls, or building wooden towers with your little ones. Mind the Gap: Avoiding the Turning Chain Hole Do you dislike the pesky little gaps left by the ch 3 turn when working rows of double crochet?

See how obnoxious? Part of the problem is that a ch 3 just does not have enough width and substance to look like its neighboring dc. Secondly, it is supposed to replace a dc, so you skip that stitch right after the ch 3 which only exacerbates the problem. Hence, ugly hole. This option is a bit difficult to master at first. Then yarn over and draw your loop behind the first loop shown here. Now yarn over and draw through both loops on your hook. It looks pretty good. A Town Girl's Life: Crocheted Boot Cuffs { Updated }

Amanda's Happy Hearth: Avoiding Stiff Crochet. Working in front loop only. Many folks feel that crocheting produces a very stiff fabric, which can be uncomfortable to wear and gives a less-than-desirable drape. If you’re in this camp, then read on! I discovered that working in only the front loop or the back loop of the base stitch increases the flexibility and drape of a finished item. My grandmother used this approach, but she never explained it to me--I just noticed that we were doing the same thing. Also it helps to use a hook that is larger than the yarn label recommends, for making a flexible crocheted fabric.

Of course, the first row usually has a length of chains as the base, so there’s no front or back loop. Working in back loop only.
