The Zelikow Memo: Internal Critique of Bush Torture Memos Declassified. Washington, DC, April 3, 2012 – The State Department today released a February 2006 internal memo from the Department's then-counselor opposing Justice Department authorization for "enhanced interrogation techniques" by the CIA.

The Zelikow Memo: Internal Critique of Bush Torture Memos Declassified

All copies of the memo (Document 1), which reflect strong internal disagreement within the George W. Bush administration over the constitutionality of such techniques, were thought to have been destroyed. But the State Department located a copy and declassified it in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the National Security Archive. The author of the memo, Philip D. Zelikow, counselor to then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, described the context of the memo in congressional testimony on May 13, 2009, and in an article he had previously published on foreignpolicy.com site on April 21, 2009. "At the time, in 2005 [and 2006]," he wrote, "I circulated an opposing view of the legal reasoning.

Pace: Troops Must Prevent Iraqi Abuse

Pace stuck to his original statement. "If they are physically present when inhumane treatment is taking place, sir, they have an obligation to try to stop it," Pace told his civilian boss. The unusual exchange occurred during a discussion at a news conference about the relationship between U.S. forces in Iraq and an Iraqi government considered sovereign by the United States. A questioner asked whether the United States and its allies might be deemed responsible for preventing mistreatment of people under arrest in Iraq, given that the U.S. and its allies train Iraqi forces.

"There are a lot of people involved in this, dozens of countries trying to help train these Iraqi forces. He added: "Now, you know, I can't go any further in talking about it. Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was asked what orders the troops have to handle such incidents. Bradley Manning supporter targeted by feds wins early victory. A founder of the Bradley Manning Support Network, who says federal agents seized his laptop because of his support for the alleged Wiki-leaker, will have his day in court.

U.S. District Judge Denise Casper in Boston yesterday ruled that a lawsuit challenging activist David House's border searches and other interviews by government agents may continue. In an opinion (PDF) rejecting the U.S. government's request to dismiss the case, Casper wrote that just because "the initial search and seizure occurred at the border does not strip House of his First Amendment rights," especially because it would have disclosed "internal organization communications" related to the support network.

House is a friend of Manning, and visited him a few times at the U.S. Marine Corps' Quantico brig before running into some problems during a visit last year. In February 2012, Manning was formally arraigned as part of the court-martial process, and another preliminary hearing is set for next month. Confinement Location. Last week, after an astounding 567 days in prison, Bradley Manning - the US Army private accused of leaking the WikiLeaks documents - finally began his pre-trial hearing.

Bradley Manning and the miscarriage of justice

In the year and a half since he has been in jail, Manning has been severely mistreated by his jailers, has been assumed guilty by the president and now potentially faces life in jail. Yet the "crime" he is accused of is something many US officials do with regularity: leak classified information in the public interest to news organisations. When Manning was held at Quantico military base earlier this year, he was shamefully subjected to extremely harsh, even torturous, conditions. He was forced to sit alone in his cell for 23 hours a day, was barred from exercise or socialising with other inmates, and stripped naked at night - all despite showing no behavioural problems. Project Vigilant made headlines after last years Defcon conference where Chet Uber alleged that Adrian Lamo volunteered for the secret organization and had been encouraged to inform the federal government about the leak of diplomatic cables by Bradley Manning.

Uber also claimed that Vigilant monitors the traffic of 12 regional Internet service providers. The news made various headlines (Forbes) but was later dismissed as a fraud or publicity stunt due to the seemingly unlikeliness of these boisterous claims. However, as far as I know, Adrian Lamo has never disassociated himself with Project Vigilant or Chet Uber and there is evidence of a relationship between the two before Mannings outing. Infact a bit more than a month before Adrian’s April 27 involuntary hospitalization and two months before Manning first alleged contact with Adrian, Chet had tweeted to Adrian something along the lines, “[Adrian] In a fiasco that I hope he seriously works his way out of”.

The Constitutionally deplorable intentions of the United States regarding Julian Assange and Wikileaks. At Occasional Planet, Madonna Gauding explains that the U.S. campaign to imprison Julian Assange and put him to death, has nothing to do with national security: Unfortunately, prosecuting leakers is not really about upholding the law or maintaining national security.

It is about making sure the government or corporations can continue to hide information they do not want citizens to know, such as the video of the horrific gunning down of Baghdad civilians by U.S. forces in Iraq that Private Bradley Manning exposed. In this example, this secret brings the lie to the official story of the so called humanitarian mission in Iraq. Exposing military wrongdoing undermines the power of the government and the corporations it supports who make their fortunes off war.Prosecuting Assange to the fullest extent, which could mean prison or even execution for espionage, is not about bringing a criminal to “justice,” or protecting the citizens of the United States.
