Adrian Campbell investigates High definition (HD) video can offer scientists a unique insight into how wave energy devices will affect the ecology of coastal areas, say researchers. A team from South-West England have designed a system that includes mounting HD video cameras on a floating array, allowing it to operate in most conditions. It will be used at the site of the Wave Hub, located off the coast of Cornwall. The findings were presented at the British Ecological Society's annual meeting, which is being held at the University of Leeds. Wave energy devices harness the energy in ocean surface waves for a variety of purposes, such as generating electricity. The HD camera system has been developed by Emma Sheehan and colleagues from the UK's Peninsular Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE). A test site for wave power devices is proposed off the north Cornish coast has met with some alarmist press comment.

The proposed hub, with electrical equipment and six test stations (with mooring systems above) will be on the seabed nearly 20 km off St Ives, in approximately 50m deep water. The test stations occupy an area of 4 km x 2 km which will be marked for navigation and should become operational in 2008. The project is sponsored by the S-W England Regional Development Agency and will cost ~£20m public money. Two UK companies lined up to use it are Ocean Prospect and Ocean Power Technologies. There’s a large number of environmental studies issued in June and originating from Halcrows, all being on the website (www.wavehub.co.uk).

Wave hub gets planning go-ahead. The government has given planning approval for the world's first large-scale wave project off the coast of north Cornwall.

Sited 10 miles (16km) out to sea off Hayle, the hub - which would collect energy from wave turbines - could generate electricity for 14,000 homes. It should deliver electricity to the national grid by 2009. It is hoped the project could generate £330m for the regional economy over 25 years. The official consent announcement will be made on Monday by John Hutton, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. The Wave Hub - a seafloor "socket", will connect wave energy machines to the mainland. The proposed power station will involve up to 20 sets of machines, with pumps, pistons and turbines, about 10 miles (16km) out to sea off St Ives Bay, generating electricity for 14,000 homes.

There was some objection to the scheme among surfers who were worried the farm would reduce wave height on the beaches. Wave Hub à l'Eden sur Vimeo.
