According to venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, technology will “disrupt” education as we know it, and maybe create a few billion-dollar companies along the way (see “The Crisis in Higher Education”), says Technology Review. According to Dow Jones VentureSource, VCs invested $217 million in digital education companies during the first half of 2012 — more than they did during all of 2010.
So which of these startups will end up mattering? To accompany its analysis of the education market, Union Square provided a reading list of news articles whose arguments it apparently found persuasive. However, Union Square says that unless people can turn “free” online courses into an actual academic credential, or into a career, digital education will remain “aspirational and removed from the day-to-day of many people.” The Crisis in Higher Education. A hundred years ago, higher education seemed on the verge of a technological revolution. The spread of a powerful new communication network—the modern postal system—had made it possible for universities to distribute their lessons beyond the bounds of their campuses. Anyone with a mailbox could enroll in a class.
Frederick Jackson Turner, the famed University of Wisconsin historian, wrote that the “machinery” of distance learning would carry “irrigating streams of education into the arid regions” of the country. Sensing a historic opportunity to reach new students and garner new revenues, schools rushed to set up correspondence divisions. By the 1920s, postal courses had become a full-blown mania. The hopes for this early form of distance learning went well beyond broader access. We’ve been hearing strikingly similar claims today. The excitement over MOOCs comes at a time of growing dissatisfaction with the state of college education.
But not everyone is enthusiastic. Rise of the MOOCs. The Value of eLearning in a Tight Economy. It is just a fact of today’s world: we are all learning to do more with less. It is important to identify the greatest value for our time and resources. That means that defining the value of learning (and therefore training) in the workplace is critical. Ruth Kustoff – Learning Strategist and eLearning Expert is letting us share with you her thoughts on The Value of Learning in a Tight Economy. Ruth is passionate about, and creative in, defining learning solutions. She explores the ideas of what would happen if learning took care of itself in your organization? Would you say, “great!”? To that end eLearning must direct itself to the specific needs of its audience with learners focused on the important elements to increase retention for on-the-job application. 11 Early Online Education Pioneers Who Paved the Way To Today. While we tend to think of online education as a phenomenon welded largely to the past decade, in reality its history extends significantly further back than that. Think “before the Internet was even a thing that existed.” Experiments in welding computing to the classroom are almost as old as computing itself, with recognizable components of current Internet-based learning roughly (very roughly) appearing around the late 1950s and early 1960s. We realize, of course, that plenty more pioneers contributed to the eventual, if not inevitable, advent of online education! But here’s a few to know initially before moving on to reading about even more individuals and institutions. Daniel Alpert and Don Bitzer:University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provided a home for the very first Internet-based community specifically created for learning purposes.
Developers Daniel Alpert and Don Bitzer dubbed their B.F. Why (And How) You Should Create A Personal Learning Network. What Is A PLN? Through the use of my own Personal Learning Network (PLN) , I came across several great examples that both define what a PLN is, and explain the value of creating one for yourself.
According to a wikispace about creating PLNs, “Personal Learning Networks are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to: 1) set their own learning goals 2) manage their learning; managing both content and process 3) communicate with others in the process of learning and thereby achieve learning goals Simply put: A PLN is a system for lifelong learning. ” Why Start Your PLN Now? Bongo LLP. Learning Design isn’t for the wimpy. I’ve had my head down on a major project, a bunch of upcoming speaking engagements, some writing I’ve agreed to do, and…(hence the relative paucity of blog posts).
That project, however, has been interesting for a variety of reasons, and one really is worth sharing: ID isn’t easy. We’ve been given some content, and it’s not just about being good little IDs and taking what they give us and designing instruction from it. We could do it, but it would be a disaster (in this case, that’s what we’re working from, a too-rote too-knowledge-dump course). And it’s too often what I’ve seen done, and it’s wrong.
SMEs don’t know how they do what they do. Part of the process of becoming expert is compiling away the underlying thinking that goes on, so it moves from conscious to subconscious. It takes a fair bit of common sense (remarkable by how uncommon it is), and willingness to continually reframe what the expert says and twist it until it’s focused on how they make decisions. In the North Texas area, online learning is chugging relentlessly forward like a train that won't be stopped. Particularly at the collegiate level, the online phenomenon is fueled by young adults who like technology and nontraditional students who need it, educators say. The flexibility added to a college career through online learning allows students to do what they couldn't easily do otherwise — juggle job, family and studies.
"It's an outstanding opportunity for students and the wave of the future," said Dusty Johnston, Vernon College president. With online options, even rural students can complete a degree or work toward a higher one without constant commuting to the big city, according to Pam Morgan, Midwestern State University associate vice president for outreach and engagement. "It's great for our area," Morgan said.
Those benefits are so compelling that both MSU and VC are offering more online options. VC offers several physical education classes online. They test online. There are 'many reasons' for universities to use e-learning. There are several reasons why universities are investing in online learning, a specialist has said. Writing for MediaShift on PBS.org, University of Kansas associate professor of journalism and Budig professor of writing Doug Ward suggested educational institutions are moving quickly to bring "centuries-old models of learning" up to date. Communication technologies could have led this transition, he suggested, pointing out mobile phones, computers and web access are cheaper than they used to be.
This is offering people the chance to collaborate and learn alongside anyone in the world and is providing simple access to internet materials, the expert added. Previously, people would have had to purposefully seek out information, but online learning means it "flows relentlessly towards them", he noted. Rising costs, alongside their resistance to change and mediocre degree completion rates, have put universities and colleges "under increased scrutiny", he declared.
Addressing the Growing Generation Gap in Relation to E. Last week I had the chance to partake in one of my favorite parts of my job….meeting with a new client. See, one of the perks of what I do is that everyday has the opportunity to bring something new and different to the table. It’s something I love and something I look forward to.
This particular client wanted to discuss the use of E-Learning and mobile learning to roll out targeted training options for their workforce. My favorite subject! So we sit down and start going over some of the basic questions I always start with. The answer that came back? Now I had to start thinking. This client brought home a topic I’ve heard rolling around the E-Learning world for months now. It’s a problem that isn’t going away. With that in mind, here are 3 key ways to address the generation gap in relation to E-Learning: 1). Before you create the first piece of training material, you must understand the needs of your audience. 2). 3).
If there is on So know your audience. Create or Upload Online Presentations and Slideshows that Don't use Flash. Beware the Lemming: The Most Destructive Trends in E-Learning. First off, let me ask you this. Does anyone know what a lemming is? Well, I’d be happy to enlighten you! See a lemming is a small rodent type creature that has a tendency towards mass suicide. It works like this. When the population gets too large, lemmings will throw themselves off cliffs in huge numbers.
It just takes one to get things started and then this seemingly never ending wave of tiny rodents voluntarily tosses themselves down into the sea. It’s one of those things that is horrifyingly interesting to watch. So here’s the question. Simple. Here’s the problem. Cut the Lectures PowerPoint is a fantastic tool, but it has it’s weaknesses. Let me guess, right about now you are thinking, “Well, duh!”
Here’s the problem. You don’t lecture to them. Beware Social Networking Social networking is known to be a powerful platform. When using social networking as an E-Learning tool you have to ask yourself, “What’s in this for my participants?” Don’t Be Destructively Creative.
