Molecule of the Month. Food is digested and broken down in many controlled chemical steps, capturing chemical energy along the way. Much of the machinery of the cell is involved in this process in one way or another, including the digestion of proteins and nucleic acids into their components, breakage of these molecules into carbon dioxide, water and other small molecules, and the linkage of this breakdown with the formation of energy-storing molecules like ATP.
